Guns in Canada

I suspect more of the anti-gun folks are closet gun owners than we know.

Hahaha, I do believe your right! Especially the ones that are trying to keep their political careers in play.

You have friends that don't own guns? Thought you lived in the mid-west? :p
There are some in my wife's family. They are certain that a gun will get up off the table and shoot them all on its own accord. But they are the same ones who believe in human induced climate change, so no logic lives in them.

I'm not sure if NPR is considered a reliable source, but I'm not sure "28th highest" would qualify us as "one of the highest"? Of course this is the internet, this is no place to allow facts and data to get in the way of a good debate :)

This one allegedly comes from the UN, linked via Wiki:

I noticed Israel wasn’t on there. That had to skyrocket upward after October.

Indeed - if we eliminated Chicago, LA, Baltimore, St Louis & New York City from those stats, I bet we’d almost be the most peaceful nation on earth who slows its citizens to protect themselves
. ;)
If you eliminated about a 10 square block area in North St. Louis (maybe 2% of the area the city covers) you eliminate almost 90% of the "gun violence". We do have one of the Mexican drug cartels operating in downtown and there have been some interesting gun battles between them and the gangs that traditionally control the drug and human trafficking. But that very rarely spills out of that 10 block area.

That wasn't gun violence, that was freedom fighting. So it doesn't count, right?
I was about to delete my posts because I didn’t realize it was 6 pages long and I was responding to page 1.

Correct…and/or/maybe Wiki doesn’t recognize it as a nation.

I deleted that post because I thought it was irrelevant to where the conversation went on page 6 ;)

I think that goes for a lot of these cities. Minneapolis as well. About 10 square blocks and everyone’s gets to keep their catalytic converters.

I am not a fan of St. Louis at all

Besides the Arch (I've never been in it) our baseball stadium and hockey arena, I have no use for the city of St. Louis. Well, other than my employer is there.... But the metropolitan area has some great areas and restaurants, especially if you like Italian food. There is never any violence on The Hill - which is the Italian district.

I go there once in a while for a foundry show at the downtown convention center. Not cool. I went there another time to buy a 39 sundancer on the river…. The guy that owned it was a Chevy dealer in town…… I sat in his office at the dealership and I felt like I was being sold a used car….. it was funny as Phuck….. I left…. Nice covered slip marina on the river over looking the arch though

If you go 1 block north of the convention center you will be in homicide central. I don't even go there in the day. My office, the 2 times I go there a year, is across the street (south) and a little east.

I don't believe there are any car dealers within the city limits any longer. Cars would get stolen at least once a week.

You mean your post wasn't relevant to a revolution in the US?

The dealer was on the other side of the river going east first exit

Interesting thread. A pretty good read in my opinion.

A few of my thoughts:

- Hitler was elected by a population that immediately became defenseless against him... in significant part because they were unarmed.

- Rebels in what became America overthrew the world's largest super power at the time. They brought their guns to Bunker Hill.

- The idea that 1-6 was an insurrection has always been absolutely laugh out loud funny to me.

- The prosecution of those who protested as "insurrectionists" brings me to tears. It also terrifies me. I'm shocked the courts have allowed this to take place.

- It is pretty noteworthy that the citizens involved in this "insurrection" in a country with an incredibly well-armed citizenry... didn't think they would need a any of their guns to violently overthrow the world's greatest super power. Yep, they came to D.C. with no weapons all, and expected storming into the capital and turning over Nancy Pelosi's lectern would topple the government.

- I have no idea what would happen if there were a real insurrection in the U.S. I certainly hope it won't happen in the lifetime of myself or anyone I love. It's hard to see how the government could maintain any real level of order over an honestly unwilling population. It's also hard to see how any other government could rise up. And even if it did, it could likely be more tyrannical. Mostly, I think the fight would lead to mass chaos and suffering of the likes this country has never seen including the Civil War.

- I hope there is a way to get back the great freedoms we have lost in America.

- I have read intelligent ideas about how this might happen, and I even have some of my own ideas. Nothing seems remotely sure, or even likely to me.

- Our founders recognized the human soul yearns to be free and that is our natural state. I agree, and I really hope that will be a fountain that can produce peace, harmony, and freedom.

As Highslice said, we are not a true democracy. Majority doesn't necessarily rule. Sure freedom has boundaries, but it's not the people who determine those boundaries. Our Constitution, by design, protects the minority position. In the USA, we have certain rights that the majority cannot trample, yet they try. The 2nd Amendment is ensure those right are secured should the other three branches of government break down.
I knew someone would call out my house of the word majority. You know what I mean. Don’t get caught up on the specifics. For each individual voting item, the majority wins. How you group them to get to individual votes on items is part of them process of your democratic process. Even if you define your democracy as a republic. Which it is.

And if your system can result in political leaders in power installed by any amount of citizens that is substantially less than the overall majority, then that is a broken system because it does not represent the will of the majority.
