Spent 4 hours showing the boat yesterday

Well Greg, my suggestion is to turn the page and wait for the next one.

If you tired of this process (like I was) take a broker and let him deal with it......

The first boat we sold was a 19' ski boat. It was 4 years old (in 1993). The night before driving across country to go overseas, we showed the boat. It was on the trailer, in a carport, clean, with all of the running lights on and interior lights on. It looked like a million bucks.

The next day, we delayed our departure and took the boat for a test ride in 20 knot+ winds. They agreed to $12,100. We wrote out a contract for payments (awaiting check from insurance for Hurricane Andrew - senior military officer - no worries). We went to Japan. I held the title. He used my registration. He paid me in full minus $100 due to finding some scrapes on the bottom that cost $100 to fix (trailer rash).

I held the title. The registration expired. He sent me a letter requesting the title. I held it. My wife sent him a letter saying I was deployed. I mailed him the title 3 months later. I was legal - he didn't complete the payment. Note to self - don't dick with a guy who is overseas over a hundred bucks when he holds the title.
Ya but did you get the $100 bucks?

What's wrong with it? Personally I do not think page and view counts have anything to do with a thread, other than members are interested in the thread. Is interest and participation a bad thing?

Interest and participation are never a bad thing when applied to something of consequence. Rehashing a lost deal or playing the "if only I had" game serves no purpose other than to induce self inflicted pain. If you are a masochist, then I guess its OK. We have enough sadists out their to make your day!

Just my lowly $.02 which amounts to nothing.

Yet by your own participation in the thread, you have just added to both post count and view count :smt001

"if only I had"

Not sure where I ever said this here or implied it. I have repeatedly stated the intent of my original post...members ran with it from there.

"something of consequence"

Glad to hear you are the "measurer" of this for the members here! Should we ask you to preview all future posts? You are just grouchy because your boat has not sold too :smt001

Greg.... I think the time and effort you put in to get this boat sold in today's market is justified... You have to do all the things you can do ...Say all the things you can say....because you will never know what that one thing was that got the girl to go upstairs

"No Harleys.":smt043

We have been having some discussions with a broker where Gary keeps his boat. We are leaning towards listing it with them. The main reason to do so is so that I can be that much closer to Gary ;-)

AH-Huuum Lets get a room for that! ROTHFLMAO

"...That much closer to Gary ;-)" :smt043 OKKKKK!

Yeah, but would I do it again? Maybe, not without using some of the tips here and trying to learn a little more about the buyers situation first though.

The Mrs and I talked about this last night. She said "keep the first visit/showing under an hour" and my immediate reply was "how can you put a time limit on it". I will volunteer up front, after the first showing, what we expect from the buyer, like a deposit.

Personally, I think you should develop some form of ESP, that way you will know right away if a client is actually going to buy or is just a tire kicker.

So, lets keep the thread going...when selling a boat, tell us your plan/strategy for when the potential buyer is standing in front of you for the first time, ready to look at your boat. Lets assume 2 cases, the buyer presents themselves as a boater, knows boats at some level and the second case is where the buyer provides enough information to tell you this is new to them.

Do you have a checklist, like show them this, go over this with them, tell them about this/that?

As I type this one additional question I think I will ask is "have you ever purchased a boat before?". If the answer is yes, "tell me about the process" will be my follow up and if the answer is no I will refer them to a broker immediately!

Actually Greg, I could have sold my boat twice but I was not willing to give her away. As far as me previewing future posts, sure, just run them by me and I'll tell you what I think. Great idea!

Oh yeah, never got my shirts.

"Oh yeah, never got my shirts."

Mrs states she mailed them all off. If you sent her a check, and it was received, get after her: amybrobinson@gmail.com

" I could have sold my boat twice"

Gary will question your use of the word sold here.....

I love it.... A pre purchase interview!

Why not? Lets me know if I am working with someone who has been through this process before...where's the harm? The only way to get information is to either ask questions or hope they volunteer it...right?

The gentlemen, and that's stretching it, I worked with here was clueless and fought me on everything I consider an industry standard when buying/selling a boat.

Well the first question I would ask is their name. Then in the... somewhere in the top 5 questions, if you need to ask it, would be if they own a boat now. If they own a boat now question, not to interview them, would tell you a lot about where they stand. There will usually be 1 of 3 answers. 1- yes. 2- no but I once owned blahdy blah. 3 - never owned a boat. If they own a boat now, then you know they will probably want to sell their boat first. If they once owned a boat, then you have an idea that they know what's involved. If they've never owned a boat, then you know you will have to figure out what they know and don't know.
