Looking for some suggestions/guidance.

Did some inspections as I am going to try and complete oil changes myself this year, feels like quite the undertaking for the first time.

I noticed the starboard air filter and surrounding area as black particles. When that air filter was removed there was a bit of oil at the base of the filter and I noticed a part that seemed to be out of place vs the port side.

Any trouble shooting suggestions would be great. Don't have great access to Cummins mechanics in this area.

The starboard engine also burns slightly more fuel than the port. Could this contribute?

You posted something similar the other day. My only guess is that the dust is from the serpentine belt. Perhaps the tensioner is going bad. Other than that, I've got nothing.

I suspect the black dust is from the underside of your cockpit carpet. Mine did the same thing. It slowly breaks down over time and finds its way through the cracks in your engine access.

Belt dust. How old? Remove it and check all pulleys, replace with new if you find nothing and retest.

I saw dust like that one time - was the Adaptor plate wearing out. This was on a QSC600. Particles were fairly uniform - but not exactly uniform.

Is this in your 47 Sedan? If so, and this is at the rear part of the engine that looks a lot like the rubber pucks failing in the transmission dampener. Do the black particles look like they are coming from the vent in the bellhousing?

Yes, I used the term Adaptor Plate - drew a mind blank for the right term.

When I saw that I first noticed it was on the air filter. Then I saw it more areas than that. It turned out to be the transmission dampener. My experience was on a 47DB. Seem to remember there was a problem on that boat. They had initially done a dampener which was not quite as hard for smoother engagement - my replacement was a "stiffer" dampener.

Thanks, I have seen this as well. This appears to be coming from the air filter area. When removing the airfilter should there be oil there?

Belts are less than a year old and this is the opposite side of the engine

I was questioning the half 'ring' I note in this picture. Also circled are area it had a small amount of oil. If you see the original pics the port side had this half ring what appears to be in place

That "half ring" as you describe it is just the handle for the insert thing in the air sep. Sorry for the technical term. Step #3 below calls it the service handle on the primary element. In step #4, they reference the drainage window. It should be in the 6 o'clock position. Did your's get turned a bit?

I am not sure if anyone has answered your question about oil around your air filter. I have QSM-11's in my 480 Sedan and yes, it is common to find some small traces of oil around the inlet of the turbo if that is what you are referring to.

Zach try this link for the 8" kit as shown in the picture above. Not sure what filter set you have but this is listed for the QSC.

Thanks,

I will get back to the boat next weekend. All I can think of is the starboard side might not be positioned correctly. The area I circled on the picture below is where oil was found. It appears to have spread to the filter slightly.

I have seen the issue with the transmission pucks before but the black material isn't rubber in this case and found closer to the air intake vs. the transmission housing

I would consider posting your question on THT and let some them have a whack at it. To me, it does not look bad, but by no means do not take what I say as valid. Lots of good Cummins guys on the hull truth.
