40 sedan bridge forum

Welcome to CSR fellow 400 DB owner.
What Chuck said. A missing exhaust outlet creates an exhaust flow/ back pressure issue. We were traveling together when that incident happened. Get it fixed asap.

Bolts that shear away on impact.
Check Flounder Pounder.
Get the casting number off the one that’s on the boat, they’re both the same

What holds the outlets on? From the picture it looks like only sealant? Anyone know of a source?
Larry, I found mine on Flonder Pounder (Sea Ray). It was about $1300.00. It is held on by screws and I used 4200 sealant. I filled the old screw holes with epoxy and re drilled them. Fairly easy job. You will need another set of hands when mounting to hold it up and putting screws in. Greg

We lost an underwater exhaust outlet on our 2002 Sedan Bridge 400. How critical is it to get replaced? We have no idea when we lost it and were likely been cruising all last season without it. It will be a few thousand to replace it and is it really necessary?
Looks a little different than mine. Wonder if it had been replaced before? Your boat is 4 years newer than mine, so maybe they changed the style.

Big week for us. Some of you may be in a different demographic than us, but we paid our boat off last week. Still doing backflips... We love this boat, and plan to keep it a long time. Not going to lie, I took a peek on Boat Trader to see what was out there if we sold it, and added another $40-50K to maybe upgrade. From what I have seen, there is not another boat comparable. Would I like to have a newer 420? Sure, but it's not worth 2X the money for essentially the same thing. I'm not an aft cabin guy. Roomy, but hate the lines on them, and the stairs. I don't think that there is another comparable boat that looks this good, with the quality, the great layout, and in this price point. It's getting hauled this weekend for a new bottom, and new props. I've found a local kid who's a service manager at a boat shop nearby that I'm going to pay after hours to spend a weekend helping me replace all of the consumables on the engines. Belts, intake and exhaust hoses, full waterpumps with new impellers on both sides, plugs, caps, rotors, thermostats, etc. Most of that stuff is now 25 years old, and beyond time to bring up to date.

Congrats on owning the boat!
I don’t pay much attention to the boat market right now but I would imagine it takes a lot of $ now to get into something worth the move up.

You are spot on. 18 months ago we walked the Annapolis Boat Show. They had 3 Sabres and 2 Back Coves of all sizes, 30 to over 50'. Gave us a lot to look at, as we love the downeast style. But as we looked at those and contemplated what the cost of a used one would be, it was still far, far more than we would want to spend on an "upgrade". So we decided at that same show to put the hydraulic platform on our 400. Not cheap, but far less than a boat upgrade! So we totally understand looking at other boats and realizing how good of a vessel we have! There's an old timer with a 400 we boat with that walks up to me every time and proceeds to tell me how - in his 20 years of owning his 400 - he's looked at a lot of boats and never found one that met his liking or better fit his boating style than this. Congrats!

Oh, and I hope your belts and hoses aren't 25 years old!

Congrats Drafter!!!

Finished the second captains chair. Seven hours today of pulling and stapling and unstapling and trimming and stapling again and heat gun. It’s finally done. Told my wife “all done ready to go bolt it in”. And she asked “did you do the seat cushion?” To which I responded “oops!”

Has someone replaced the steering Hydraulic cylinder. How can be inspected or accessed? I don't see an openning. I have been thinking about making an opening in the transon compartment area to access the steering hydraulic system.
any thought?

Well up here in MN we’re about 6-7 weeks from launch on the St. Croix River. However our boat just went into the barn at the marina to get some fiberglass work done. Had a big soft spot on the bow above the master bed, at the aft near the bottom of the stairs, and also by the drain. All issues that the surveyor found and we negotiated on price upon purchase.

Here are the photos I got while service peeled back the bow and exposed the wet and rotten balsa core. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like here it is! Looks like one of previous owners tried injecting spray foam as a band aid.

Boat is scheduled to be in the barn for the whole month of March getting soft spots repaired, new beach shoe, and forward windows resealed. Also new electronics (thanks hail storm!). I’ll keep updating with pictures of course.

Wow! Did your deck feel spongy like a soggy deck or sole in an old boat, or did it just flex a bit when you walked on it? Mine is not soft, but does seem to flex some around the hatch which makes me nervous. I'm not exactly 130lbs, so I just avoid walking close to the hatch area to avoid that. Did you have any signs of water damage inside? What was their quote to fix something like that? Mine has been under cover its whole life and out of the weather, so years of rain and a leaking hatch shouldn't be an issue. Years of teenagers taking selfies in a group on the bow is a different story.

Well me being all of 260lbs it was all very spongy. In the previous survey, the headliner was replaced b/c of water damage and in our survey, the moisture reading was very high. We purchased it knowing it was going to have to be repaired and got the quote of ~$15k to repair it, using it to our advantage during negotiating. We wouldnt allow anyone on or near it during the boating season!

If you search this thread I have asked the same question but not found the answer. I am thinking of adding a hatch under the transom shower hatch or behind the cockpit seat. I think this is a huge safety issue as regular steering inpections and maintence is impossible. The only kown way to get to the ram and gear as I understand is remove the generator then remove the water tank.
Let us know uf you find a better way.

Both captains chairs done. Have all five bench cushions sewn and three installed but short 1/4” pink sew foam that arrives tomorrow, to install the last two. So one more picture coming then I’ll drop this topic.

For those interested, I used Sunbrella Horizon Capriccio vinyl. White color is their “Cloud” and darker color is their “Flax”. The vinyl has a real nice felt like backing that gives it structure for ease of cutting and sewing. Tools I used were a Juki 1541s industrial sewing machine, Sailrite short nose upholstery stapler and a heat gun (had no idea I would need this and it was the difference between smooth finish and lots of wavy wrinkles). Consumables cost about $1200; vinyl, 1/4” pink sew foam, new bench seat foam, staples (lots and lots of them) and thread. Of all the pieces I only had to start one over. It was the wrap around on the very base of the second captains chair. I thought I’d get cute and try something - didn’t work. Time - I’d say 4 weeks total. One week for each of the four major items: captains chair #1, captains chair #2, bench backrest, bench cushions.

Thanks for your comments. Definitely will install a access Hatch in the transon compartment where the Shorepower connector are. large enough to have access.

Done. Pictures with and without decor. Biggest takeaway for me is how soft the new vinyl is compared to the dried out hard 20 year old stuff.

I’ll be gone from here for a while now. Might be back. Might not. Really there is nothing more for me to contribute. Everything I’ve learned is all documented in this thread, 6CTA thread and a few Westerbeke and Systems Monitor threads here and there.
