So, I thought that it's up to me to do all renewals. Reason for my question here is that I received a Vessel Renewal Notification Application For Renewal in the mail today from Dept of Homeland Security. Is this legit?

doubt it, probably a third party. How much money are they asking for? Usually the third parties are $200-300 when it should really be like $25-30 or whatever the renewal cost is

This is the body of the letter.

Yes that is legit. The US Coast Guard operates under the DHS.

My expiration date is Jan 31, each year they have sent me the renewal notice, I fill it out write a check. This year I mailed it on 12/19 and got the Certificate back on 1/4/23

You may want to do it online. One year my mailed renewal got lost in the mail and I did not realize that because there is no one to speak to when things go amiss. I ended up paying a late filing penalty after a lot of hassle. Switched to online and things went smoothly from that point forward.

Too late.... Dropped it in the mail this morning. I'll just watch to see if it clears within the next week or so. I have time before I'm late.

Pro tip on USCG Documention: On our first boat, the documentation renewed in November of each year. Well, one year, I got the new certificate and promptly put it in a safe place at the house until we went to the boat or spring came. Well, fast forward a few months, and I have no idea where I had put it. I called the documentaion center and they have a protocol for replacing a lost certificate. If memory serves, it was $50. As I was about to say "send it", the kind person on the phone said that I could just renew for $26 and re-set my renewal date. Very helpful.

I've been known to put stuff in a "safe place" never to be found again.....

Another tip for owners who lay up boats in the winter. Set a documentation date during the lay up period so you do not have to worry about a current certificate while you are boating. Paperwork screw ups happen. Deal with them while your boat is in storage.

I just do the multiple year renewal and don't worry about it for a while.

USCG falls under the jurisdiction of DHS. That looks legit, but it can all be done online.
