This state/country is messed up

My son is a mechanic/manager/half owner of a Jiffy Lube in Tempe. Cannot get anyone to hire/work. His most recent hire got Covid, off 10 days. He literally has 3 employees including him. Barely able to keep the store open.
I called today to get my dryer fixed. No heat, gas dryer. 2 and half weeks out. Nobody wants to be a technician anymore.

One of the local Subways has been closing at 4:00PM on Fridays cause they can't get enough employees. Seeing it everywhere. There are help wanted signs everywhere for lower paying jobs but the higher paying jobs are hard to get

My son is 17 his High School has been trying to hire janitors. After having no luck they decided to ask the students if they were interested. My son applied and got the job. After working 1 week they want him full time. The pay isn’t great but they offer an excellent benefit package.
My wife teaches and she mentioned to a student near the end of last year that the school hires students to help over summer. He said his mother doesn't allow him to get a job cause it will take away from her welfare benefits

We used to have a guy that would always trade off of prevailing rate jobs for the same reason. Would loose benefits for his kids with the live in girlfriend.

Ridiculous

My HR is now requiring me to "take notes" and write down answers to questions so they have it for "their file"; my questions the ones we wrote for our interviews. So we will be so focused on writing down answers and less focused on listening and asking good follow up questions.

I am a HIRE or NO HIRE interviewer: https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2006/10/25/the-guerrilla-guide-to-interviewing-version-30/

  1. Are you smart?
  2. Can you get work done?
  3. Are you a fit for my team?
I just went thru 4 rounds of interviews for 3 finals candidates, and said "NO HIRE" for all of them after the last interview. It sucks, because I have to keep looking and doing interviews, but it's easier to hire the right person versus fire the wrong.
I am very much the same. I don't need 2nd interviews. I don't need to write down answers unless they have unique skill that I can utilize to offer additional services to client. Although "Are you a fit for my team?' is the first question I get answered, because if that is "no" the interview is over. When I was younger I hired some very smart, capable people who were not a fit for the team, the culture or my management style. Their tenures all ended with them sitting in front of my desk. Waste of time and resources.

Have her take the Police department tests. Local, state and federal. As many as she can. Recession proof.
Pension and benefits for life. They are hiring females especially.

I don't think most departments offer quite as rich a benefits package as they used to. At least in Michigan I think most, if not all, have done away with pensions in favor of 401k's, even at the state level.

And if the OP's daughter is looking for $90k this would be a non-starter for police work I'd imagine.

State Police should make more but I was a bit shocked at the starting rate for NYPD:

True, even the railroads changed a few years ago, maybe 10 years from the pension to a matched 401k. I was hired way back under the original pension system (and a 401k) and was able to retire getting the same monthly income as when I was working. But those days and benefits are going away.

yeah my step-son is a cpl detective and with OT only makes about $80,000 and his pension sucks. No 401 offered and they get 50% of their base salary upon retirement. I worked in law enforcement for awhile also and at this point would never recommend anyone getting into it. My step-son is looking to get out ASAP as he knows he will have a tough time retiring on that pension. They are also not eligible to collect social security upon retirement for some reason so he would be stuck at about $40,000/year for the rest of his life.
Most dpats around here start out at about $35,000-40,000 IF you can even get full time

Sheesh, 50% guaranteed doesn't sound that terrible in the grand scheme.

They don't get social security for the years as an LEO because they aren't paying into it. It's a pretty straight forward benefit...you gotta pay in to get out :)

Yeah I think you are right they don't pay in. But to live off of $40,000 with no 401 or no SS. Dunno. Doesn't seem great to me. Of course he could fund his own IRA or whatever but how many actually do that?

EDIT: actually I think their pension is based off base salary, which is about $50,000 so they have to live off of $25,000

Obviously depends on the program. Buddy of mine is a retired police chief of the next town. Retired before 50 and took a corporate security job. Makes big bucks from the corp., plus his pension. Then because he missed it so much to a part time officer position in the next town and the rumor mill is they got him pegged for chief when the current guy retires. He’s killing it.

The town I live in is good for police officers. We have no chief cause the Lt has ran the last 3 out so council gave up and let him be in charge but wouldn't give him the title of chief. He retired last year but made $170,000 his last year. It's a small town of about 8000 and he put a policy in place that a ranking officer must be on duty at all times and there are only 2 ranking officers so that's at least 84 hours each for the 2 of them. There are only 9 officers in the dept.
Our town owns it's electric dept so charges about .20/kwH to pay for the police department. And they don't handle any major incidents. Any car accident with death they call in the state police to investigate. Any violent situation they call in the state or a neighboring agency to handle it. They say they don't have the training. My step-son is on the CIRT team for a neighboring agency and they won't call them in because of a 'rivalry'. Their dept only takes incident numbers for things that require a written report so only have about 5000 incidents per year. Our dept takes a number for everything, including if another officer calls off work. They patrol a small boro twice per shift and they take a number for each of those so that's 6 incidents per day there. So our dept has about 9000 incidents per year so they take those numbers to council saying they handle so many more incidents than neighboring boros so they should get paid more. They have tried to get my step-son to work here but although he wold make quite a bit more he said there is just too much shady stuff going on. And where he works is a 3rd class city so they cannot disband the dept but ours can be disbanded and that has been talked about due to their contract. Then after 2 years they can start up with new officers
