Starlink

this couple flush mounted one on their Nord, cool install.

Here is part 2. He has some great fabrication skills using that mill and huge cajones cutting into the dish not knowing exactly what was inside. I wonder if his service will suffer because the dish remains stationary and flat as opposed to being able to rotate?

I’m curious too. I think they are in Seattle so more north than we are. While we were on the mooring the dish wants to point to the north sky and would adjust every time we swung about 180 degrees. I’m fine with leaving on the foredeck while at anchor.

The comment that Starlink isn't FCC approved for mobile applications in the video is interesting, but I can't find any other substantiating information as to the reason. I'm assuming that Starlink is simply a web interface but I wonder what other features are/will be available. Wondering if Sx is working on an array that will be useful like KVH...

Some great news - the FCC has just approved the Starlink transceivers for mobile installations. This is huge for use on boats.

This is great news! Sitting at anchor working in the Great Salt Pond. Thanks to starlink we were able to get a jump on the holiday weekend!

Has anyone heard about any manufacturers with a permanent mount yet?
Haven't. Knowing the way Musk works I'd say they will develop the technology and own it. They rarely outsource anything or allow anyone to capitalize on their hardware.

Just read an article published by Galati extolling the virtues of Starlink.

$10,000 initial equipment cost.

$5,000 monthly fee for marine service.

Makes the DirectTv bill look a bit better, at least in the short term.

Link to the article?

I have a good friend who is on a 7 day charter boat out of San Diego out fishing for tuna in Baja. He posted a picture of the charter boat’s $599 receiver and $42 mount. I’m guessing the boat pays $135 a month like everyone else I know.

Will happily post the link in the morning when I am back on my laptop. Not sure if you think I am being untruthful or if you think I am not intelligent enough to understand what I read. I did provide my source, Galati Yachts. Either scenario I will provide the link so you feel better.

I would suspect that your data point is based on someone that purchased a land based option then put it on their boat.

The post above was referring to the approval and release of a marine deployment. My post was reflecting the first published pricing - if I am intelligent enough to comprehend what I read - that I encountered.

Just trying to be a good CSR contributor and share what I “think” I read.

Have a great evening.

So just talked to my buddy who is sitting in old Bahama bay @ west end right now streaming tv over his star link. He says it is not fast speeds but it is working. He has the RV version. I got to think it is on the edge…

I found the same link with the same pricing. My thoughts on that ad is it is targeted at mega-yachts and commercial ships. The RV version is much cheaper ($599 equipment, $135/mo) but is intended to be stationary, not rocking on the front of the boat. If it works, great! If it doesn’t, don’t expect any love from starlink. You would certainly be safe using the starlink in port from a marina dock. It would likely work in the marina from the bow of the boat. It may even work in calm water while on the go, but I wouldn’t count on it in that situation.

Actually, the rv version is getting great reviews out on the water. A buddy of mine just got one for his 50 Prestige. He was streaming 168 mbps coming back across the channel from Catalina. He found a fabricator in Colorado that makes a marine mount for the antenna.

Please get us more about his marine mount and where to get it.

Thank you for your contribution. I simply posted what a majority of actual people are experiencing. Even on a commercial fishing charter, Starlink in the RV/portable format seems to be the choice. I asked for the link because I wondered if that was a “mega yacht” unit. I’m sorry if I came across questioning your integrity. That was not my intention.

There are a few technical hurdles that Starlink needs to cross before a mobile platform becomes mainstream. First in their next technical deployment is spacecraft to spacecraft comm link (laser based) which they do not have right now. This will enable a mobile station to move and seamlessly transition from one to another spacecraft. They are working on the FCC approvals and their next gen satellites are ready to go. Also, apparently, there are some problems with the 12Ghz band allocation they need and a conflict between several operators; the FCC is working through all of that.
So, if you plan to roam with a rigged antenna, Starlink will throw some pretty costly fines at you as they will know when a system is moving across satellites. They apply a surcharge to fixed locations that relocate but do not use the system in-transit. A lot of RV'ers are now using Starlink but they pay, I believe, another $35 for the feature.

I suspect but don't know that these expensive mobile solutions are capable of communicating with a multitude of spacecraft simultaneously thus supplementing that spacecraft-to-spacecraft link to enable in-transit operation. Consequently, the equipment would be quite expensive and there would be a huge consumption in bandwidth. Then there are the unique marine feeds which in themselves are expensive.

Well they don't picture a mega yacht, more like a 50 motor yacht https://www.starlink.com/maritime

Crazy pricing and certainly not worth that expense. Would be nice if that permanent mount would/will work for while at anchor.
