Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Answers to a couple of responses. Before any of this happened, ran engines out in the lake for hour and half with no problems. The problem occured when returning to dock in the river at idle speed. Engines ran fine after restarting and all the way back to dock. No problems which leads me to believe what Bill Collector said about the electrical box and the relays. Another friend of mine with the same boat and 3126 cats experienced a similar problem with the electrical box recently. They are changing the fuel filters as I write this so will see what that yields when I get to the boat. Pump handle....will check that this weekend. Thanks guys for your replies and will update once I know anything.

Here is the previous thread on the relay... http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/cat-3126-shut-down-while-running.79104/

Update: Old fuel filters were clear and no leakage. Installed new ones so I think we can eliminate that problem. Another thought for all of you to ponder. The halon system has sensors which can and do go bad over time. They would shut down the engines right? Just a thought.

The relays are under $10 a piece at any auto parts store (mine from O'Reilly's). I would replace them out of routine maintenance if for no other reason.

For those following along at home $10 sounds like cheap insurance to me. Do I need this one for my CATs? Stole the pic from the thread @The Bill Collector referenced.

When I asked the mechanic if I needed to purchase valve cover gaskets for the engine valve lash and fuel injection timing he said it's not necessary, that they are made to be reusable, that he can replace them if I want him to. I'd rather be safe than sorry since I am purchasing all of the parts and he is providing the labor.

Thoughts?

I don’t know what that gasket costs, but given the ones installed could be 20+ years old, I’d replace. CAT parts are pretty reasonable cost wise.

However, I doubt that gasket is a source of a lot of leaks either.

I spent a lot of time several years ago trying to find the K&N filters for my Walker Air Seps. K&N makes them for Walker and they are proprietary for Walker only.
I bought a new set from Walker, not cheap for an air filter but not break the bank either.

Went to Cater Machinery today to pick up some parts. Once again they are all yellow, not white. Is this normal? They confirmed my engines show up as "marine" in their system.
