We ran thru some crude oil looking sludgey mud Sunday that covered the swim platform. I cleaned it off with the boat soap I have and it did fine as best I can tell.

I saw this in West Marine yesterday and bought some: http://www.starbrite.com/item/non-skid-deck-cleaner-with-ptef

I got home and thought "is this stuff necessary?".

"The protective polymers provide a barrier against future stains, making clean up a breeze"

Is this a true statement?

Do you use a non skid deck cleaner/protectant?

Thanks

I always clean my deck with that stuff when real dirty and then protect with Woody's wax. For light cleanings I use Woody's Ultra Pine soap which is a wash-n-wax type cleaner.

I used the StarBrite non-skid cleaner for a couple seasons. I never bought a second bottle though. I found that doing a decent job waxing your non-skid is 368% more effective at keeping it clean vs scrubbing the heck out of it every weekend. With decent wax up there all you need is normal boat soap.

I'm still trying to find a wax friendly solution to spider crap though. Man those things...ughhh.

I use that Star-Brite deck cleaner and its a bit better than simple boat soap at stains. Not a lot better, a bit better. I don't notice any lasting protection through. I think that is just hype.

I use it and the woody wax. Seems to do a good enough job for me.
I use Woody Wax too, but despite what they say, the deck is a bit slippery after its used when its wet. Not as bad as regular wax would be, but slipperier than unwaxed decks.

So for those who clean with this stuff and then apply a wax,, are you cleaning the topsides, gunnels and swim platform with this stuff? My thought is I do not want to apply this stuff to the topsides/gunnels only to have it run done the hull of the boat on top of the wax.

I wet anywhere near where i use this stuff
i use it sparingly and immediately follow up with a light deck brush. Let it stand a few mins and wash it off and hose down anywhere that may have come in contact.

*WARNING*, the nonskid cleaner is EXTREMELY slippery.

Non skid wax. Yes really

It's not slippery. Not hydrophobic. Acts more like a sealer. And no I have never slipped on my ass or any other body part because I used that product on the non skid.

I used to use it and thought the white stuff in the lake was just the cleaner rinsing off. Turns out I didn’t know better and my nonskid was so oxidized it was the oxidation rinsing off. It worked well but didn’t protect it at all

I spent hours compounding, polishing, and waxing/sealing the nonskid this spring. I’m not quite done yet but it now has a nice shine, doesn’t collect dirt, and cleans easily. It’s not any more slippery than before, either.

we do have the diamond pattern so it’s more aggressive than the older ‘sand’ style but I’d venture it was never polished or waxed since new

Okay, now I need to wax my swim platform at a minimum. Besides Woody's, what wax and compound are folks using for this? Do you apply it just like you do to the hull and top sides?

I have some McGuire's flagship on the boat, is that safe to use?

any cutting compound followed by a sealant or wax. Product shouldn’t matter too much this is more about technique

I am a HUGE fan of Drake and his processes. I did this to my non skid last year, including the Jescar power lock. While it definitely helped, I still found myself needing to clean portions of my non skid with the starbrite/west marine non skid cleaner. Maybe i need to do it again....
