New problem, this year. The Bose remote refused to work after we launched. At first, it would at least reset the house code but nothing else. Wouldn't turn the system ON/OFF. No way to tune a radio station. No way to start a DVD. No remote volume control (the biggy).

Talked to Bose customer service; no replacements available but they'll repair for relatively cheap. Sent it. It's back. They included a note that said they didn't see the symptoms I described, but their testing may or may not have "fixed" the issue. Still no workee.

(Also, the remote model we have was supposed to have ended at hull #524; we don't have the one listed for subsequent hulls like ours. No clue why.)

Actually, it seemed to be trying to work, at first... and I could select sources, control volume... but after about 20-30 seconds the system started switching back and forth between Mute/Volume. And then the remote stops working altogether.

Actually, the first time I called Bose customer service, the nice lady described a reset technique: unplug the power, main, and Acoustimass cables. Let it sit. Restart. I eventually did that several days later, at the back of the LS48 head. It didn't actually do anything that first time, but I've tried it again and it seems I can sometimes get back to the remote slightly working until the Mute/Volume things starts again.

The second time I called Bose, the nice man suggested trying a couple other reset techniques. I've forgotten what those were and didn't take notes... and they didn't work either. That's when he suggested sending the remote to them.

Some of this is leading me to believe the problem may be something else with the system that needs to be "reset" somehow.

What's an Acoustimass? Where is it? What does it look like? I think this is the one where the flat multi-wire cable goes... but I cant yet trace where it goes from behind the entertainment center cabinet. It disappears off into the sunset, and I'm not seeing anything that looks like it could be a sub-woofer or some such.

Ideas? I can call Bose again on Tuesday or so, but wondered if anyone has encountered a similar issue... and might suggest a fix...

Plan B (or C or D or whatever it is): I asked the nice Bose man if there's a replacement system that would take advantage of of the existing sub and cube speakers. Maybe not; he said their current stuff concentrates on wireless connectivity. OTOH, I could see scrapping the LS48 thing and replacing the surround sound somehow if it doesn't mean fishing wires all around Hell's half acre...

On a slightly different note: I connected our new TV to our router the other day, and all of a sudden we now have an extra 200-300 "stations" of free Samsung "TV Plus." Kind of like cable without the cable, I guess. Haven't reviewed much of that, but it was an unexpected serendipity if there's any decent content in there somewhere.

The bass module is under the forward section of the starboard sofa. You need to remove the forward section of the seat back to see it. I’m not sure that will solve your issue, but that’s where it’s located. Those Bose lifestyle systems have an “end of life” period. I’ve had 2 different ones (one in home and one on previous Sea Ray) die. And before they die they sputter and choke with random symptoms.

@tc410 Thanks! At least now I know where it is. Can't reach anything on it without completely dismantling the starboard sofa, but it's a start knowing where stuff is.

I tried to simulate a reset using instructions here:

Substituting a move to OFF on the Entertainment Center breaker for everything that required access to cable connections at the Acoustimass. No joy. The symptom continues: after a short bit, sound goes to bouncing back and forth between mute and sound.

I might or might not try to do a real reset; depends on how much appetite I can gin up for dismantling the sofa to get there from here.

Can't say I'd have much confidence all that work would pay off. Did you ever try one of the Bose reset techniques on yours?

Looks like our goal could also be relatively easily solved with a new soundbar/sub-woofer and a separate Blu-ray/DVD player. Orphan the Bose equipment, including the Jewel Cube speakers, in place... and get on with fixing something else more important.

Wouldn't have minded somehow reusing the Jewel Cubes, though, given they're right out there in front of Gawd and everybody...

WOT Test

Our build sheet says the boat originally came with 28x37 4-blade props. I've read here that Sea Ray replaced those with 30x33s... and the stampings on our current pair confirmed that (once I remembered to look).

We hadn't been able to reach rated 2300 RPM WOT after our engine rehab last June. Over this last winter we got the bottom and underwater hardware all cleaned up, and had the props reconditioned by Miller Island Propeller in Baltimore... and during that they changed pitch to 30x31 to make up the difference we'd reported.

Early yesterday morning we got a chance to test again. Clean hull, full fuel, full water, 2 persons, no dinghy, calm water, cross-ways to tide/current: RPM 2385P/2365S, coolant temp 185P/187S, %load 98-100P/98-100S, %throttle 95P/100S, GPH 40P/43S, speed 29.5 kts.

Good enough, for now. I can retest once we get the dinghy (if I can ever get the GHS platform to work) and then we'll see what further mods might be necessary, if any.

I don't know if the original 28x37 spares were replaced or not. If they were, I might have them reconditioned next year -- perhaps instead of the wheels that are mounted now -- using this info as a guideline too.

Most were replaced under warranty (to 30X33's) as I understand. My dockmate's '05 had 28X36's and they worked well - 2350 WOT and no ventilating or hub erosion...
 
Mine are a set of freshly tuned 29.5x35.5's. I did my MAN sea trial after my M5, A1 and A2 this winter on a flat calm day with no current, clean bottom, full fuel, full water, slightly less "stuff" than normal but no dinghy. We hit 2368/2371 at 98% load, MAN was happy.

Now that we are loaded for the summer and the dinghy is on we will pick a day that isn't blowing its normal gale when we have full fuel and do another run.
 
Finally got the new dinghy loaded up. Still working on exact placement and getting the tie downs the correct length but getting there. It still fits with the actual beam of the boat but I would not want it any bigger! Sort of wish we had gone down a size but you give up the seat in front of the console to do that.

Nice setup!! You made a good call on the size. I was going to get a 380 but went with a 340 - very glad I did…. I’ve seen several people that thought since the boat has a 16’ beam, I can get a 16’ dinghy - doesn’t work that way!!

Given our LS48 issues, and given I can't easily get to the back of the Acoustimass to even try a master reset... I decided to do a Plan B. In the meantime, or maybe forever.

Last Sunday I ordered a Samsung HW-Q60T 5.1ch soundbar/subwoofer, and a Sony BDP-BX370 Blu-Ray/DVD player. $315.87 and $121.89 respectively from Amazon, including taxes and free delivery.

I did a trial hook-up today, all good, easy HDMI connections, the subwoofer connects to the soundbar via Bluetooth, etc. The "surround" channels are virtual and it's not a huge sub... but it's a relatively tiny room and the system all sounds good.

The front-loading Sony disc player will fit easily in the same slot in the A/V rack previously occupied by a Direct TV box. The sub does NOT fit in the empty area just to starboard from the slide-out A/V rack. Misses by about an inch-and-a-half in width. Rats. So I'll have to decide where to put it; several relatively easy choices are available -- under one of the starboard settee cushions, probably even behind the A/V rack -- but I'll work on the rest of that next week. And I'll probably mount the soundbar to the TV mount, so it's suspended above the tabletop area there under the TV.

I would normally have picked a Samsung Blu-Ray/DVD player -- given we have a couple Samsung TV/disc player pairs at home and they work together pretty seamlessly -- but apparently Samsung is out of the disc paying business these days. The Sony player seems pretty straightforward, and it's not like Sony doesn't have deep disc experience.

The only thing I've actually lost from the LS48 is AM/FM stereo radio. My current thought is to replace saloon/galley ACs next Spring, which means the starboard settee will have to be dismantled... so I can try a master reset then, see if that happens to do anything useful to the Bose. If not, I can remove the Acoustimass, head unit, and more wiring at that point.

Sea Ray Monitor Replacement Phase 1 is complete.

Over the winter I ran a n2k backbone from engine room forward bulkhead where old Sea Ray Monitor black bow was mounted to behind the salon entertainment system and up to bridge and across the hardtop and back down into helm station. If anyone does this it's about a 60' run. I bought 100' just in case.

RIM100 sits in engine room and DSM410 almost fits up in bridge overhead electronics box. I had technographics make a filler panel for me.

This phase just has the heat detector, two emergency bilge pumps and a monitor for the other three pumps. Next phase will add another RIM100 to get the vacuum switches on the fuel filters and generator low oil pressure. I will also add a vacuum switch to the generator fuel filter.

The internal alarm in the DSM410 isn't very loud so will add an n2k alarm module.

Big thanks to @ttmott for pioneering this swap.

I also swapped the nmea0183 depth transducer to a n2k version so always have depth when n2k network is in, which for me is 24/7.

Sad to report that TBIV is in brokerage. Between my wife’s new job, my growing Company, and our youngest son’s college prep baseball travel league, every weekend this summer is booked. When she sells will be the first time since I was 24 that I have not owned a boat, and the first time in 18 years without a Sea Ray.

It was many of your posts on the 420 DA forum that tipped our decision to go with the 420/44 DA's, and last year moved to the 58DB.
