EGT and Boost via nmea2000

We are in. I brought the boat around last Saturday. Just finished polishing the topsides yesterday. We were going to do a weekend on Block for Mothers day, but the weather is not cooperating.

Have been in at homeport since first week of April but now waiting for a window to do the 50 mile cruise to Mystic.
 
Finally got the chance to take the boat for a cruise. Aside from one of my egt sensors dropping off over a a certain temp, all worked well. Have a bit of calibration to do on the coolant and oil pressure sensor but very happy so far with the upgrade.

How’s it been working for you? What has been a normal EGT?
Have only run the boat a few times at cruise and wot but my average egts at cruise 2200 rpm was around 830. WOT is about 870. Trawler speeds 12-1300 rpm are about 500-550. First run was solo and my trip to our summer slip was in dense fog so will get averages on next run when I can focus on the numbers.

Do what model Garmin MFD are you using? Do you know if my 1243xs would also be capable of displaying engine parameters like yours?
Where you installed sensor for boost was there already a bung there or did you have to drill and tap? I won't be at boat for a few days and can't check.
Your posts have me really wanting to at least get going with boost and EGT's. Also with your rudder angle what sensor are you using? Wondering if the autopilot sensor for the old Raymarine autopilot could feed the info but imagine a convertor from 0183 to 2000 would be needed.

I’m running a 8616 and a 1222. Your 1243 will surely display the same. I removed air temp sensor for grid heaters. So the boost sensor fits in its place. I’m also still using my factory raymarine autopilot and rudder angle indicator via an 0183 converter.

Ok thanks for the info! For the rudder angle 0183 converter, and again not being able to go to boat for few days, were did you get tap the 0183 wires at? Did you use one of the converters from Across Oceans or?

If memory serves I’m coming off the tridata with raymarine’s st/stng converter to nmea. Did that a few years ago so haven’t had to modify since not motivated to change autopilot anytime soon. Hope that helps.

Yes thanks - will look behind the autopilot head and if no individual wires maybe try piggy backing off the NMEA 0183 wire block and see if it picks up there. Will look into converters.

A thought came to me this morning - my Garmin 1243 is connected to the auto pilot via 0183. So should I be able to get the rudder info and would the autopilot need to be powered on to send the info to Garmin? I’m guessing I could go to Garmin settings and look for data overlay edit page and see when I get back to bot.

Boaterholic, sounds like you’re planning to install a Smartcraft-to-NMEA 2000 converter of some sort to get your engine data? If so, and your OEM Smartcraft has a rudder sensor ( I think most do), then you should see rudder data from there post-install. In my case I have rudder angle coming in from both Smartcraft and my autopilot and can pick which source Garmin will use.

i have mechanical engines so no smartcraft.
The converter I was referring to is one of several available that converts 0183 to 2000. And some will also convert the other way.

Now that I’m getting boost and egt numbers. I’m wondering if this can help me ascertain the load in the motors. Egt’s seem to stay around 840-850 at cruise and boost is 19-20psi. We generally have 2 adults and 2 kids on board. Took full crew of about 10 adults and gear out this past weekend and the numbers were exactly the same. So my question is how do I use these numbers to see how I’m loading the motors? Is this possible with just egt and boost? I would have expected to see my boost a bit higher when fully loaded.

You need to locate the EGT curves for your engines, and compare the numbers for any given RPM. I'm not as familiar with Cummins, but I have seen these numbers posted, probably on sbmar.com. Tony would know. You need to make sure that the numbers that are published specify the temp probe location (typically after the turbo outlet in marine engines), and you have yours in the same spot. From what I read, Cummins has a prefered spot.

The biggest issue is you want to be at/below the max EGT's. If your over, your overloading your engine, and likely need to reduce prop pitch. This is also related to making rated WOT RPM. This applies specifically to mechanical controlled marine diesels (as opposed to electronically controlled).

Once you have established what YOUR boat runs at RPM/EGT/Boost wise, you will notice an increase in both boost and EGT, and speed decrease as you add weight or drag to the boat. I noticed my EGT/boost climbing and my speed at a given RPM down 1-1.5 knts at the end of last season. A short haul reveled a mossy beard growing long and strong. A simple power wash, and all was back to normal.

Has anyone installed the Yacht ID sensors on an axiom pro? I got one to read under air temp but I can only get the other one to read using water temp. Can you get the sensors to read under any other setting? I was wondering if there is a way to get them to say EGT?

I requested Raymarine add this ability to the Axiom about 3 years ago. One of the latest software revisions supposedly say the PGN is supported, but I can’t get it to display. I’ve given up on Raymarine and EGT.

I choose Maretron as they can display EGT.
 
Irie308 where did you get the 90 deg for the boost sensor? Also does it have to be calibrated?
