Hoping to help

"OK, I will go against my own post here......" NOW THAT'S FUNNY RIGHT THERE.

Well, nobody listened/agreed so I figured I would go with the flow. I was trying to help...oh well.

If you smell gas, then thats a different story.

Its always better to have more gas than not enough. Because more can always be compensated through carb adjustments.

After rebuilds its stated to turn the mixture screws all the way in and then 1 1/2 to 2 turns out to start off. Then you adjust it accordingly. I'll always tune them by ear. Can you estimate how many turns yours are out?

The key with adjusting the mixture screws it to always turn each one the same amount, full turn or 1/2 turn. You keep equally turning each screw until you hear a difference in the motor(normally the idle with go up a bit) Keep turning until it starts to bog a bit and then back each screw up a turn or two.

Chris,

We have had several members mention that they are losing gear lube on a regular basis. People have discussed that if it is after a recent service it could be due to air getting in the line but others seem to be losing a good about out of the reserve on a regular basis. It is mostly sport boat owners with 2006 or later boats. Normal??? Not normal??? Should they bring it in to have it looked at??? Just keep adding Lube as needed???

I think the amount lost varies but say a weekend on the lake and they get home and it is a quarter low, not to add mark. It is not being lost while the boat is not running.

I have had it happen to mine but mine seems to be limited to right after a service then I add one time and it is good to go but others seem to have a continued problem.

I'm not Chris, but...I would call somewhat normal if it happens once after a service; probably some air got in there while they were pumping it up in there.

But if it continues, the drive needs to be pulled. My guess would be that that gear lube is being deposited into the Ujoint bellows due to a leaking oil seal in the upper unit... You'll know as soon as you pull the drive and the drive shaft is covered in goo... :smt001

Gunn pretty much hit it on the head, after changing the gear lube, air pockets do develop in certain areas and that is exactly why mercury came out with the monitor bottle.

As long as it just happens one time and you top it off and it does drop again your ok. If its a consistent thing then you will need to have it looked at.

Possible leaking points.
-Upper and lower shaft seals
-Shift shaft seal
-U joint seal
-Not fully sealed drain plug gasket.
-Crack in nose cone from impact

As for the excess fuel problem, it is possible that the float may be stuck and constantly dumping excess in there. I don't know if you tried playing with the screws at all, but give it a shot. Big Blocks do love their fuel though, as long as your not hearing any backfires it really isn't to big a deal, except on the enviromental end of it.

The only possible cause for excess is going to be in the carb, if you can't adjust it enough to make up for it then there is an internal problem.

Welcome to the board, Chris.
Perhaps we can keep putting the questions into the correct topic area so that they will be easier to reference later, and won't be all mixed together.

It will create a bit more work for you as you would have to browse the different sections, or if you come by often, just look at new posts since 24 or 48 hours.

Looking forward to your guidance. See my post in Sport yachts about the need to remove the stbd engine to service the generator on a 1998 370 Sundancer.

I tried this already...see my first post...folks did not receive it well.
