Couple of Cummins 480ce questions

If you have to replace the heads on the 480ce (which I hear is about 10k for both sides) can this easily be done in a 42 Sedan Bridge? Do engines need to come out or is there enough room in there to do the job with the engines and boat not completely disassembled?

Second question. Say there is an oil pan gasket leak? Is this an easy fix? Does engine have to come out? I can't imagine the parts are much but the labor must be intense?

Yes. Love the 50 DA but not thrilled at spending 350k or more. So looking for a deal, like I always am, on a 42 Sedan Bridge. The 480ce with original heads scare me but there seems to be plenty out there with 1500+hrs and original heads.

I’m still finding that pretty much every boat I’m looking at is over propped.
 
I saw two on Yacht World. One in Myrtle Beach for $270 and one in Orange Beach, AL for $275. Have you checked those out? The one in MB has just under 1,000 hours.

Looking at them all, at least by searching and looking at the ads. The MA one is beat at 274, AL might be a little too difficult of a transport to the Chesapeake and the one in Myrtle Beach seems a little rough and maybe even neglected after talking to the broker. The bones might be good and all it needs is a little TLC, who knows.

04 in FL private sale but the guy is at 325 no matter what. No einenglass, rebuilt engines (120 hrs) but I'm not paying 325!

The floor opens up on the Sedan Bridge to give great access to the heads. For the pan leak I would be sure it is the pan as I have seen these engines sling oil out of the dip stick tube and look like a pan leak, usually when they are filled past the middle mark on the dipstick.

And that's a good point - fill marine diesel engines no more than the mid area between low and high marks on the dip stick. I fill my QSM's to the low mark on the dip stick; that is a tick over 7 gallons plus the oil filters for each.
