My 7.4 MPI is supposed to hold 6.6 litres, but I only got 4.3 out of the dipstick tube with an extractor when I did the oil change. I know there was 6.6 litres in there because I just rebuilt it and put that much in there. I am reading on the forums that this is a common issue.

Any ideas why I can only get 4.3 litres out of the dipstick tube? Is there that much oil caught up in the engine and oil cooler, etc.?

Your signature says you have a 496 but you are asking about a 7.4 mpi which is different - which is correct?

My 7.4 mpi always drained close to the 8 qts so I’m not sure why your only getting 7 qts (assuming after filter drains too).

Sorry I can’t help much but just wanted to bring to your attention the discrepancy so others can help on the correct engine.

Thanks for pointing that out. That was my previous boat.

I had a vacuum hand pump and I got the same as you out of my 7.4L. When I switched to the jabsco pump on the bucket, I get almost all out.

Do you use the entire dipstick with the garden hose connection or use the small tube that’s slides in the dip tube.

I also assume that you get the engine good and hot so the oil flows easier

I brought the engine up to operating temperature on the trailer with the muffs. I first sucked it through the tube by clamping a 3/8s hose on it, then after I got as much as possible I put the smaller tube in to check and didn't get anymore. Both sucked air bubbles after I got the 4.3 litres out.

Same thing happened with mine. I'm sure it's because the dipstick tube didn't get positioned correctly. It's too far off the bottom of the pan. I'm installing a drain plug hose and will run it up the side of my motor where I can connect a pump.

I'm thinking the same thing, thnx
