Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

Not long for the oil, few hours maybe. The coolant and the block, overnight. It takes a while to warm up 1500 pounds of steel. I leave mine on, an added advantage is the warm engines act as a dehumidifier.
I removed my air heaters because one toasted similar to blue ones. It’s not for everyone.

Is there a breaker for the air heaters?

There’s a fuse in the harness but nothing to prevent a solenoid from hanging and over heating the grid.

When reinstalling Heat Exchangers and After-coolers, is it recommended to use any kind of lubricant or adhesive like stuff to facilitate sliding the hoses on? Can I spray the inside of the hose ends with silicone? Just curious what others have done.

Thanks,

Jaybeaux
I sometimes use a bit of silicone grease

Good morning all! Enjoying the heat?? Quick question. Does anyone have an idea as to why a diesel may just stall after coming off of plane for over an hour an running great? No alarms, started right back up and ran fine. Second time this happened. I'm new to diesels, so unfamiliar territory.
Thanks,
Mark

BTW...Cummins CTA 480's

I realize this has probably been solved, in case not, there is an ECM update that came out a few years ago that cured the stall/stumble issue with the 480s. I updated mine and the problem went away.

So I’ve been searching and wondering if there is a service kit for the housing on the airsep for these motors. Specifically there is a sponge type of lining in the housing. I’m getting a few drops of oil out of the housing and wondering if that material needs to be replaced. Or do I need to look at replacing the check valve on the attached oil return line?

I recommend you call Walker and talk to their technical guy. I’ve talked to him several times and he will tell you everything you need to know.

Just finished reading all 45 pages from start to finish. Great info so thank you guys for all that. My questions are does anybody know if cummins sells a kit to add the on motor dual guage kit and does anybody have a diagram on were the sensors are attached?
Also you guys are using that cummins website that I'm hearing you enter the motor serial number or model number and all the oem part numbers come up. I can't seem to get it to work. Asking me to make an account but they want me to pay as a dealer or a mechanic? Would love to be able to use the site but can't figure out it

What are you looking for?

I use this site for parts breakout:

https://quickserve.cummins.com/info/index.html

If you mean boost/EGT, sbmar.com sells a combo boost and EGT gauge. Boost sensor goes on air intake. I put mine where the grid heater temp sensor was (I had removed my grid heater stuff). My3sons can tell you where the exhaust temp sensor goes. I didn’t install that.

Yup I have those installed already. There amazing and very very helpful while running. As far as the setup I'm looking for is this

I want to install a mechanical oil pressure and a temp sensor
Dont you have those already?... I dont see any info on your boat. The only time I use those gages on the engine is to verify my dash gages are corelating

If the housing is leaking, check the glue seam where the filter element seats against the housing, it may have developed a crack. I had some success painting a thin coat of epoxy over that area when one of mine started an occasional drip there 5 years ago.
The foam material inside will eventually begin to break down and crumble, it is not replaceable. The newer housings are made differently and if you speak with Walker, they will tell you that the airsep bodies have a 10 year life expectancy and you should consider replacing them. Also, they are fragile, 30 in/lbs is the torque spec for the band clamp to attach it to the turbo. don't over tighten. The distortion/pressure could start a leak.
Good luck.

Foam will begin to deteriorate as seen in this photo.

Great info. Thank you. Going to pull it apart in a few weeks when I haul.

I do not.. i have a 98 formula 41pc . That's my exact reasoning for wanting them. Compare to guages at the helm

Hey Jonathan, good to see you around again. You should update your boat info., you've been around here long enough to know that we don't care if it's not a Sea Ray. Hope you are doing well, best of luck with the Formula.
