Anchor rope hangs up

Old thread but useful information. I find I have to open the access hatch and manually keep pulling on the anchor line to keep it from piling up and then jumping the windlass. I'm definitely going to follow the suggestion of swapping the rope end-for-end and then backing the boat to un-kink the line.

Did you install a swivel?

No swivel, yet. It would have to be a heavy duty version to work with the 3/8" chain.

I can't remember the name of the company I got mine from but they do make them. I will be at the boat tomorrow I think it's written in my logbook

found it tonight. Ultra Anchors makes a swivel that will fit your size. They aren't cheap but it did eliminate the problem once and for all

Might also want to douse your rope with fabric softener. Makes the rope a little more pliable after splashing around n what ever water your into. I soak my rope every year. Just something one of the guys told me might make a little difference.

Is it preferable to put the swivel between chain and anchor, or the rope line and chain?

Between chain and anchor. If you put it between the chain and rope, it won't go through your windlass. I bet after reading that you'll say that "saying" that made Homer Simpson famous! :smt001

Thank you both! I needed that giggle I just let out!

Bringing this back up front.
I purchased CIVILITY last October. Had a definite problem with my windlass. All chain, no rope. Chain was slipping BADLY. Gypsy needed replacement but is not available any longer. Opted for a new chain and rope combo as the inside of the gypsy where it catches the rope was in good condition. 15' of chain and 150' of rope sized as specified by Lofrance. The previous chain was obviously incorrect for this windlass (side by side obvious differences) as the new chain rides perfectly on the "worn" gypsy. . OK, that's great. but now my anchor rope which is attached with a swivel, is new and soft, has no kinks, is piling up in front of the "drop down hole" and binding up with the gypsy. I also have to open the rope locker and pull (ever so gently) on the leading end of the line to keep it feeding in. This is OK as long as the seas are calm. It would be nice to operate the windlass from the helm in these situations. Thinking about "lubing" the hole but afraid to foul up the new line. My access hole is clear and free of burs. Anyone else have to deal with this and what was the outcome. Thanks

How's the finger tension that rides along the gypsy?

Is there a burr or something the rope is getting caught on?

Might need a small file to smooth the surface from years of chain use?

LOL I had to buy a new finger. Bought the wrong one for $180 by mistake. Tried to install it, scratched it and P2 Marine would not take it back. Bought the correct one for $190. It works as directed but the rope unfortunately still pools before the drop down access hole. (on a positive note, I was able to sell the first finger on ebay for $145)
Will definitely recheck for burrs.

Did you completely flake out the rope before feeding it through the gypsy? Either way, do that again. Drop everything in really deep water (ideally deeper than the length of your rode) and pull it back in. That will allow any remaining stress spots in the natural twist of the rope to work themselves out. If it still does it, it's either inferior rope that doesn't have a good, tight twist or there's an issue with the gypsy/finger/spring.

LOL. the deepest water we have around here is about 30' I have to take it through the ocean for winter haul. (not until mid December) Maybe I can drop it straight down then. I have flaked twice in the bay though puling out all line and retrieving it. Unfortunately with a chain attached.

The ad says they use NE ropes - and it looks like it, too. Unless there's a defect in the rope, which is highly unlikely, the rope is not to blame. NE Ropes has good stuff.

Next time on the water, I'll try to take a video of the issue. Like I said in the post. Ever so small of a pull on the leading end keeps it trouble free. Thank you for your help.
