nice - I've been in MDR for many years. Right now there are MANY new slips open - some wiggle room with landlords. I'm currently moving mine to a new Marina. Happy to answer any questions (if i know the answer). One thing the marina i'm moving to had as a requirment is the boats age not be older than 1986. Made it by 2 years. Heading for Avalon this weekend. feel free to reach out. askworldtraveler@mac.com. David

I just bought a 450EB in the Delta and we are bringing it to Southern California next week. We will either be at Shoreline in Long Beach or Cabrillo Way in San Pedro, depending on slip availability. Shoreline has a few 45' and 50' slips, but our beam might be too wide. We are hoping they can literally "squeeze" us in. LOL. If not, Cabrillo Way has a lot of options available. We looked for slips from Oceanside to San Pedro and everywhere else has a waiting list.

Marina del Rey is probably too far north for you - many many new slips - market is getting soft imo. Nice boat - Enjoy!

I lived in LA for a decade before moving to Vancouver 8 years ago. I lived in Playa del Rey and loved it out there. I had friends that lived over in the marina and I would often times walk around out there fantasizing about owning a boat. (I bought our first boat in 2015 up here). But this had me thinking ..IF I ever did come back down to LA, curious what a 40’ slip runs in Marina del Rey on an annual contract? Anyone know? Assuming one can even get in of course. I’m sure there’s a very long waiting list. Perhaps OC would be a better bet with more options?

We avoided MDR due to the traffic. Our son just graduated from UCLA and that stretch from downtown to the 405 is brutal. We are new to the salt water after owning ski boats and usually heading east to Havasu or Lake Powell, so we might move marinas after we figure what we like. We do have good friends who have their sailboat at MDR who love it there.
I wonder though about a “soft” market. The boat brokers I have been in contact with over the past 8 weeks or so say the market is on fire. We had a hard time finding a boat and a slip.

I can’t tell you what the rate is at MDR, but after calling and visiting nearly every other marina south from San Pedro to Oceanside, I have a file folder full of applications with slip rates. 40’ slip most places will be $675 to $750 per month, excluding Newport Beach. I was told 90% of the slips in Newport are owned by the Irvine Company and their rates are much higher.

Hey @Shoyrtt - The “softness” in MDR has everything to do with the timing of a number of construction projects and slip renovations all happening at the same time.

There were 4 to 5 parcels in the marina that were all being renovated at once and required the existing boats to all move before they tore out the old 60’s era docks to replace them with brand new new docks.

A year or so ago there was an acute shortage of slips… But now that all of these construction projects are finishing… All about the same time it’s the opposite situation where if you drive around the marina you’ll see many newly renovated marinas with barely any boats in them at all.

As a result some of the marinas are offering great incentives which include free months of rent etc.

Here is a link to the vacancy report...this one is from January - not sure why it hasn’t been updated...but tons of empty slips remain as of today:

We ended up at Cabrillo Way Marina on “C” dock. There is a nice Sea Ray 420AC next to us. If you are in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by.

New to boating. 220 Overnighter out of Los Angeles.

Roughly $1K a month. Could be more depending on which basin you are in. I have a 340 and pay $650 a month in MDR. I did get 1 months free rent when I moved into the slip for signing an annual contract.

Haven't seen anyone from Southern California here and just wondered where they all are? Sound off, people. Let's represent and state your home port, weekender or full timer and what your interests are.

I'm in Newport Beach, 2003 320 Sundancer.

Hey everyone! First post on csb and figured this was the best spot to do it.

Anyone else in San Diego!? Rookie boater, trying to buy within the next 1-3 months.

You picked the worst three months of the year to buy!!!! Highest demand and lowest inventory.

Better to wait until the end of this season (Septish) when more is available (typically).

Welcome to CSR!
What sort of boat are you looking for? Not only did you pick the worst time of the year to buy, prices right now are abnormally high. Check out this thread with lots of examples of pricing gone wild here in the US: http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/man-are-boat-prices-going-up.103498/
CaptainEd here on CSR has his boat at the Kona Kai Marina in San Diego. Let us know what you are looking for and maybe we can help. When I bought my boat last summer, I ended up finding it in the Delta near Sacramento and brought it down to SoCal. The prices were better and it was nice to get a fresh water boat.

Hey Kas, ya boat prices have gone insane. But i found if you search The book of faces in your local area you can find something to float on. Buddy, its not like a car. You will spend way way more than you plan. Breaks a lot, requires massive attention and repairs. Owning a boat aint for shallow pockets and peeps with no commitment to the lifestyle.
