Marine Max Acquires Crusiers Yachts

What does it say about the industry if a dealer network can buy a manufacturer?

"MarineMax, Inc. (NYSE: HZO), the world’s largest recreational boat and yacht retailer, today announced the acquisition of KCS International, Inc., better known as Cruisers Yachts..."

It says money is cheap

They are getting too big....
Like when Brunswick bought SeaRay, Bayliner, and others in ‘86. Or Genmar bought Larson, Luhrs, Ocean, Hatteras. It’s during the boom times the little guys sell out to the big boys and make enough so their great grandchildren never have to work.

I was 1 in '86....didn't know Genmar bought Hatteras, interesting! I only knew they owned Glastron, Larson and Four Winns.

I thought Hatteras was owned by CABO

Other way around, Hatteras bought Cabo, one of the guys behind the original Cabo Brand is back as Mag Bay

It looks like neither owned the other. Likely Cabo fans liked the idea they owned Hatteras and Hatteras fans liked owning Cabo. while the truth was Brunswick spun them off.

"Navis HCY Acquisition LLC, an affiliate of Versa Capital Management LLC, bought Hatteras and Cabo from Brunswick Corp. this week. The brands had been on the market for six months. Versa Capital CEO Gregory Segall said in a statement that he sees a “great opportunity” to build value in the businesses."

Wonder how that worked out for Genmar owner Irwin Jacobs. He killed his wife and himself in a murder-suicide a couple of years ago.

Lots of turmoil in the boat market even as sales are booming...

Are new boat sales booming in the 45 - 70ft range?

My suspicion are new boats sold out very quickly, replacement inventory wasn't there.

The hot part of the market is the center console, under 40' market. Those are replenished in the supply chain on a shorter interval.

Demand spilled over to fuel an exorbitant level of activity in the used boat market.
