official 290 Amberjack thread

For the guy that has the outboard amberjack where did you get that too made?

I had to remove the swim platform, glass all the holes plus the Bravo three outdrive cutouts. I added knee braces and gussets above the knee braces as overkill. I had the bracket fabricated in Plymouth MA by John Borlan. He did an excellent job. The boat is a bit lighter now by well over 1,000lbs dry. The boat runs with a better attitude more bow down.

Any difference in stance or ride? This boat maybe lighter but that weight is hanging farther back now

Maybe a dumb question but i have a 2000 amberjack 290. How do you use the discharge? I turn breakers on for macerator and then hit discharge switch and no sound nothing happens that i can tell
Make sure the seacock is open...located behind batteries(port)

I need to run a wire from the area below the dash to the compartment under the rear bearth that holds the water tank and sump pump.

Has anyone removed the upholstered panel on the inside just in front of the helm station?
Are there other wire conduits or chases that run over to the port side from that area for lighting or outlets to the bathroom or galley?

Any help appreciated.
This is aj290 specific.

Has anyone replace the steering wheel on an 05 Amberjack 290? I tried to replace it with a stainless tri-spoke one before but it doesn't fit I think the Amberjack needs a special steering wheel and not just the universal one with the 1 nut on the cover and I don't know what they are call. The shaft is slotted or something of that nature. Do I need a hub adapter or something? Thanks in advance.

Anyone have issues with water in the shower sump area? Had about 4” of water outside the pump box.
Had to replace the shower sump pump a few months ago, float switch was bad or something and I was getting water on the floor because the sump pump wouldn't work. Very simple replacement and wasn't that expensive either. Got my sump pump from amazon. Good luck.

I had my mid-berth opened a few years ago. There are chases running for and aft on the port side for plumbing and sanitation and an aft chase on the stb side for the tank plumbing. I believe the wiring for the tank sensor and the sump box runs up the stb side under the dinette or helm but I don't recall it being a defined chase. I would think your best bet would be to pull the wire from the helm to the bilge then into the mid-berth. Alternately, you can try to follow the wiring for the sump box. You may be able to fish down to the mid-berth by removing the small panel inside the rear cabinet over the dinette (closest to helm). Here are a few pics I had of the mid-berth opened, hope it helps.

I replaced one on a 2000, I assume they're the same helm. You don't need an adapter but you need to make sure the replacement has a slot for the keyway. I bought a Gemlux 13 1/2" wheel https://gemlux.com/collections/boat-steering-wheels/products/6787 Tell them you're a THT subscriber and they'll give you a pretty substantial discount.

Thank you so much man, thats the sam exact steering wheel style that I want. Does it get really hot to the touch in the summer ? And which wheel nut size option did you choose because there's 3 of them, I am pretty sure we have the same stock steering wheel. Thanks again. Tommy

Hello! I went to the boat today and tried to replace the steering wheel with the same exact one that you have. When I remove the steering wheel there’s a big slotted metal piece under it. Does your stock steering wheel has that piece too? And if so did you just remove it ? And how did you remove it ? I couldn’t replace it because I didn’t know how to approach it and hoping you could help me. Thank tob

Hello again! Got the Gemlux wheel and nut that you suggested and went to the boat to install it today. After removing the steering wheel there's a slotted metal piece under the old steering wheel so I didn't know how to approach it. Was your stock wheel looks like the picture below also? If so, did you remove the slotted metal piece and how did it come off because I dont think the gemlux wheel can go on top of it as the keyway is not exposed. Thanks again for your time.

This is the stock steering wheel.

It looks like you removed the hub from the wheel. I simply removed the nut and used a gear puller to pull the entire wheel off. You’ll need to remove the hub from the helm then you can install the wheel directly over the keyed shaft. Here is a link to another thread somewhat describing it. Do a search for steering wheel and you’ll find other pics and discussions.

This is what the back of my wheel looked like. I'm assuming yours is a newer style with a separate hub but the helm mounting should be the same.

Hello everyone, 1st post...
I have 2005 AJ, had a leak from starboard side cabin window next to table. Need to remove the cabinets (where breaker panel is) and the one to the right of the window. Need to get behind upholstery to inspect and clean up any mold. Anyone ever have to do this? Thanks for your time.

My 05 AJ has the same problem on the same side, the wooden panels where the window is is all rotted out. I haven’t attempted to remove anything yet because it seems like such a big project.

Thanks Tommy, my feelings exactly!!

I tried tighten all the window screws and such but still has water leakage. Made the carpet under the dinette nasty looking.

Anyone knows to to remove the winglass up and down toggle switch? I was trying to remove it so I can replace the dashboard panel but I couldn’t figure out. Thanks in advance.

The knurled ring that is against the front of the mounting plate is a nut. You will need to hold the body of the switch and use pliers or something to turn it. Looks like you might want to soak it in PB Blaster or something for a few before trying it. It looks pretty frozen.
