48 DA Owners Club

I was wondering if any of you 48 owners had a 460 prior to your present boat? If so what are the major differences in the two besides older electronics. How did the older model run compared to the newer 48? Anything in the older model that you liked better than the newer one? Did the older one handle as well around the dock as the newer one?

Curious question... looking to get back in? I have wondered about this model as well. Looking to see if we can be live-aboard boaters but if that doesn't work a boat of this size but a lower price point to allow more travel outside of boating has some appeal....(or I can just get a raise :))

Yes I am, I realize that I really miss the lifestyle. Since my slip at the yacht club is a 45 minute drive from my house we use a boat as our weekend condo on the water so I need something large but like you I’m not sure I am ready to get into a live aboard size vessel. While I miss boating I also miss the camaraderie that we have with our club members. I have always thought that the late model 460 Sundancer has a nice layout. With the changes that are going to be coming our way in the next 4 to 8 years an I’m getting close to retirement I feel it is better to have a lower price point in a boat than tying up a lot of funds floating around in the water.

Looks great!!! Well worth it. Thats on my list at some point!!!
Grant, getting back to you on the fuel line brackets. I've had a couple of conversations with SeaBoard Marine. They don't have a part number for the bracket either. They do have a core siting in their shop with a bracket so I'm trying to get them to pull it off and have their machine shop make me a couple. They're supposed to get back to me this afternoon. If I'm able to convince them to do this, do you want two? I'm sure the price will help with the decision. I'm waiting to hear back on willingness to do it and how much.

100% yes...

When we did our engine survey Cummins was aware of this part and confirmed we had the upgrade to the fuel line.
Can the part not be sourced from Cummins?
Yes, I'm finding that they realized the problem with fuel lines failing. I spoke with Seaboard marine today and they were very helpful. They were actually unaware of the problem. They tracked a couple down for me. They confirmed there's no part number as well. If anyone out there doesn't have the bracket, I'd say it's not an "if but a when"..the high pressure line compression fitting fails. Mine left me with several gallons of fuel in the bildge. Could have been worse.

Found them and ordered them from "The Modern Shop". Looks like we ordered just the fuel lines and should have ordered the update kit.

I just moved up to my 48 from a 460 last years. You will definitely miss the full windshield and the climate controlled cockpit if your 460 doesn't have it. The mid cabin stateroom is just a pull out couch but works OK in a pinch. I think the seating in the back cockpit was actually larger and accommodated more seating on the 460. The catwalks are wider on the 460 which you will love. Natural lighting is less inside the 460.
As far as performance, the 48 has more hp but weighs more so about a wash. Maneuvering around the docks just as easy as your 48.
Let me know if you have any more specific questions.
Good luck!

I have had both, In boating everything is a tradeoff. The cockpit in the 460 is preferable IMHO for a larger family, the port seat in the 48 is great. The full windshield in the 48 is great as long as its not too hot. I never like to run my cockpit AC , fresh air is preferable. The helm area is very good in the 48. The cockpit seating in the 48 can be a little tight for 6 people. The salon is nicer in the 48. The diesels in the 460 are underpowered and or the props need adjustment. Both run and handle great, I thought all things equal the 48 ran a touch better, but the 460 is no slouch as long as you run her at slightly lower rpms. Both great vessels. If you would like any more information dont hesitate to contact me. All the best in year search.

that’s so funny!!!
Grant, I finally have got around to replacing my overhead lighting with the Lumitec Orbit's. I remember awhile back you had done this and posted about removing the Dimmer module and whatnot. Can you remind me what you did? I think you mentioned you couldn't change colors until you wired the lights directly to a new SPST switch. Thanks!
