Ok so I have a 1985 Sea Ray Seville Cuddy with a 1992 Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One. On the water yesterday and all of a sudden trim wouldn't go down. Would go up but not down. So to get it down I jumped the two wires coming out of the lower solenoid so I got home ok. So a couple of questions. Are these solenoids expensive....I wouldn't think so but who know when it comes to boats. I saw somewhere that I could just buy one from an auto parts store....is this true? If so how do I let them know which solenoid I need or are they all pretty generic? Next question: Can I replace this myself....it looks pretty straight forward but just checking. Not a mechanic by any means however I have done numerous other plug n play type things. Thanks for any and all help.

Don,
You are almost certainly right about the solenoid causing your problem. In fact, I always change both while I’m at it. The solenoids from mercury are about $29 and I would advise against using anything besides OEM parts, they have a very specific fit. Using anything but, will make a fairly simple job unnecessarily difficult. Also, I would be prepared to clean all wire terminals with a piece of emery cloth or even sandpaper.
Good luck
