As some of you know we're about to make the transition from a boat to a motorhome. One of the things I would like to add is a dash mounted GPS with a fairly large screen. I've gotten really spoiled by the 11" Raymarine I have on the boat and would like to go with something a little smaller than that.

All I can find on Garmin's website is a 6.95". I already have a couple of that size in the cars. Given that the distance between the screen and my old eyeballs is going to be about twice what it is in the cars I'd like a screen somewhere between 8" and 11".

Anybody know of a company that makes such and animal?

Also, for you RV owners, does anyone know of any GOOD RV forums? I'm not looking for the ones where they bash the brand the other guy tows or drives, but sites like this where there is as good exchange of info.

I would get a good mount such as a ram mount and use an iPad Pro (pro Because they are larger) with cell service and use Google maps or Waze. Then you end up with real time traffic and routing. Or you could tether a iPad without cell service to an iPhone

+1

Yes a must for Waze and the iPad. I have a Navi in my car but instead always use my iPhone 11 with Waze because it’s so much better. Way more intuitive and informative. An iPad with Waze in a motorhome would be perfect.

The only problem is he may want directions when there's no cell service.
I have had a few trips where there's no cell service for hours.

Waze is without a doubt the best gps you can get. I think with an account you can set your height. I wish they had a dash mounted Waze device as I need my phone for other tasks.

if your car has Apple car play you can plug in the phone and use waze /music apps etc. and tell Siri to make a call or text etc.

OK, I am a total ZERO when it comes to knowledge of Apple stuff. Never used them before, not the phones, not the ipad. none.

So I just looked at Costco for product info and they have basically two models that should work. One with 64Gig for $430 and one with 256Gig for $620. If I bought the 64 gig and will only be using it for navigation will I be sorry I didn't step up to the bigger memory model?

Whoa, whao, No need to switch to "Crapple"! You can get a good quality Android tablet with GPS and do all that and a "boat load" more.

You'll want it eventually. You may want to download songs and play them via bluetooth from the device. You may want to download books. Not to mention said maps which region by region can add up quick. 64GB in this day and age is nothing really. Just like a boat, buy your next iPad first.

OK, M Prod, that's enough of plagarizing my "Buy your second boat first" line but I must admit it did make me chuckle.

I hadn't planned far enough ahead to even consider uploading a ton of songs. We have a bazillion CD's around here that will likely find their way into the RV, and we both have Pandora on our phones.

But you are correct with your advice about not buying the 64GB model. Thanks.

Are the Costco models wi-fi only or can they connect to your cellular carrier? Must have cellular connection IMHO...

See, I'm such a newbie at pads that I can't even answer your questions Mike. I don't think connecting through my cell carrier (Verizon) would be a good way to go because wouldn't that really rack up the minutes?

Mike, if you're able to go to Costco, find the guy in the wheelchair in the electronics area.
He knows his stuff, and is very helpful as far as how the tablets and such work.
