460 DA Owners Thread

Well I can't let The Wolf get all the "Winter" Credit. We've been busy in Texas too!

So Far, we painted the engines, rebuilt the turbos, replaced all hoses, powercoated the aftercoolers, elbows, and piping. Also replaced wire loom and zipties. Just generally freshened everything up. Still have raw water hoses and Exhause painting as well, but I got side tracked installing a new Furuno Autopilot!

I still have the Genset to do as well as paint the turbos with Ceremic high heat paint and replace the fuel coolers which I also had powercoated.

For reference I used Rust-Oleum Canvas White paint with some Majic hardener added. I handpainted everthing after wire brushing and treating with Ospho.

There are 6 engine room lights which are Lumitec Ibiza and there is such thing as "wire loom tape" which is absolutely amazing and available on Amazon.

The after bilge under the Genset is painted with Interlux Bilge Kote Gray and I plan to expand this once I finish he other detail work back there.

Lastly, I have a local friend who made the decals on the engines so they all look nice and new as well for a final touch.

I posted this in the Cummins forum too but I figure it’s relevant here!

If you see anything out of the ordinary feel free to let me know.

That looks GREAT!!! As I am not a mechanic by any stretch....did you have to take all those parts off to do the painting?

Well yes and no... I took the exhaust elbows and all the coolant lines and pipes off because I sent them to a powder-coating company. As far as the engine itself and transmissions, we just wire brushed them and primed and painted. Lots of labor but I sure am proud to not have rust when I look in the engine room. The problem becomes now everything else looks like it needs attention. I guess that's just part of it for a 19 yr old boat.

Was able to install the thruster tunnel tonight as well as the tail piece..I have to give kudos to my wife for the assist!!!

She got right into it and dirtied her hands with Sikaflex, helped bolt the tunnel and tightened all the fasteners while I laid in the bilge under the genny. Lastly she helped make sure when I tightened down the tail piece she insured that it was centered in the tunnel. That is a key aspect of the install.

It isn't a hard project, but there are a lot of steps to make sure you don't overlook. As I told my wife, I installed the tunnel and tail piece about 5 times by myself to make sure I understood what was entailed when we did it for the final time. It's much easier when there isn't a lot of caulk/sealant involved...LOL

Next step, waiting on the battery to arrive and run a few feet of wire then install the motor. That may be the hardest part! Laying on my side under the generator and lifting a 66 lb. motor in place will be FUN (NOT)...at BEST!!
A little touch up to do on the bottom paint from wrenching the nuts to the tunnel, but all in all it looks good!

Looks good. Where are you mounting the battery and charger?

View attachment 63215 View attachment 63216 I don’t think the 400 head and the 460 are the same actually. If it were me I would template it even if he did have a pattern because all boats are slightly different.

I used teak and holly on the steps. Attached is a pic

Thanks NotHerDecision for a great upgrade idea. I've almost got this first winter project completed!

Looks great! What kind of wood did you use on the risers? Is that a tongue & groove product? I am guessing it is something with some flex to it to round out the curves.

Do you have any pics of the demolition portion. :) You can message me with that if you like.
Thanks
Bill

I will get some pics for you when it is complete..but to answer the question, port side stern. I have a marine electrician friend that will assist with the charger install...no sense in taking chances with the electrical. :)

You guys make this forum awesome. I think of getting a bigger boat once in a while (or daily) but our little corner of CSR is just amazing. Anyway glad I could inspire you 491kation and I’m just interested in the charger because I feel like that is a weak spot with our boats. I would love to have a AUX charger mounted somewhere in the boat

on another note: one of my fresh water pumps failed. I am thinking of going to the Jabsco variable speed one. Anyone have suggestions or opinions?

Hey Wolf, this is what I started with, then what it looked like while doing demo. I found that the risers can be punched out pretty easily with a hammer and then you can pry the steps up with a crowbar. I used them as a template to cut out new plywood and then glued the teak and holly plywood to the base. I reused the curved pieces to nail the risers onto. Risers were 3/8" plywood with teak facing. (Sorry about the sideways pix)

FYI, I had to do multiple cuts part way through the back of the plywood to get the bottom riser to bend around the radius. I just marked where the curves would be and then started making full length cuts every 1/4" to get enough flex to make the curve.

Wolf - Are you still happy with the cockpit AC the you installed? After having used it for a while, anything that you would do differently? I've still got all your instructions and am thinking that might be my next big project...

I am very happy with it!!! Its all my black canvas that creates the problems...LOL. I only wish I could find the factory angled output vent that goes where the ice bucket is. No one seems to make that anymore so if I want it I am going to have it custom made. It's all good and really knocks the heat down to a more tolerable level...if I were in Houston, it may not work so well, but in northern Michigan it is a blessing both for HEAT in the early part of the season and cooling it down during a warm rainy muggy afternoon in July/August.

Yes, a project worth doing and glad we did it.

New project query...
Has anyone replaced their two 3.5 gpm pump water system into a single 5.3 gpm water system? If so, any issues you've discovered or challenges that arose during the installation/removal?

I have all the parts ready to order for the pipe fittings, just want to make sure I am not overlooking any issues like wire size or amperage draw on the larger pump.

TIA

Wow - GREAT LOOKING WORK!

I powder coated a number of parts on my CATs in my 410 and was very pleased with the results. On my '58, when my "MAN man" performed the major service, he used white Imron paint for the heat exchangers and black Imron paint on the charge air coolers and turbo housings and they came out looking great as well. The black paint prevents the "tan color" on the normally white parts. Sounds like your hi-temp paint and hardner should give the same results.

Thanks for posting your pics - now I've got more work to do!!

I did that, but I kept my good pump and just replaced the bad pump with a higher gpm pump. It works well however I notice that it is a little noisier.

GEEZ!! I'm so glad the Admiral doesn't come on CSR or I'd never hear the end of it... flooring, painting, hoses, stern thruster...I'd never get off the boat! But then, sometimes that's not a bad thing. ;) Great projects gents. Keep 'em coming!

Has anyone acknowledged the beautiful working conditions yet? Epoxy floors and well lit?
Where is this?

Elk Rapids...just a little north of you. :) It's my personal storage condo. located a mile from Grace Memorial Harbor in Elk Rapids.
My partner and I built 17 of them a few years back because we were tired of paying to store our boats somewhere else and not having access to them. We have year round water, floor drains, WI-FI, cable TV, heat with WI-FI thermostats, bathroom & shower, security cameras and automated lighting...a pretty nice facility. The garage doors are 20x22..overkill!!

This is a link to the 18th unit (or 3rd building)we put up..a mass storage building for seasonal tenants.
http://anchorsawaystorage.com/
We have 13 large boats stored here with the same amenities...WI-FI, in floor heat, automatic lighting, bathroom/shower, digital key access, security cameras, floor drains, hose bibs, 30 & 50 amp hook ups and most importantly..SPACE to work around their boats. All tenants have 24/7 access at their leisure and can work on their boats throughout the winter. We have some great tenants and a long wait list for people that want to get in. No other facility in the north allows boaters to work on their boats like we do with 55° in floor heat and unlimited access. A cozy little place to store you pride & joy in the off season.
