We have to run with a friend from Nantucket back to Newport who is having fuel injector issues. He has Cummins 480
CEs with ZF transmissions. The plan is to run with one engine at about 10 kts, close the thru hull, and place the transmission in reverse to keep the shaft from freewheeling. We’re looking for any suggestions on if this sounds like a good plan and the Admirals are looking for reading or drink suggestions for the long ride home.

Putting the transmission in gear will not lock the shaft, it is like an automatic tramission of a car, and needs front pump pressure to engage.

Do you know if the shafts have cross over water lines (being able to supply water pressure from either engine)? If not, you will need to tie off the prop so it does not spin and burn up the shaft seal.

Thank you for the reply. This was the one issue we were contemplating and were planning to check when we get back to the boat.

There can be problems with cross over lines back feeding water after a while. I have been told that you are good for 5-10 miles. Other than that pipe wrench or line and secure the shaft.

The 460 does not come with crossover lines from the factory. It’s easy to run one and I suggest you do. You can also tap a line off of the air conditioner pump to the shaft seal because I don’t believe you can stop the shaft from spinning. The ac pump has plenty of pressure so that would be my preferred method.

Is the boat in danger? I’m why not get injectors to the boat? I’m available to discuss this on the phone if you want more information/help.

I can probably have injectors to you on Monday if that’s the only issue but what caused them to fail? If it was fuel then you are taking on another risk.

Let’s talk.

Or....pull the prop, reduce the drag and leave the shaft alone. Long trip.
