Who Has Added Smartcraft to their Engines?

One is for single motor
One is for 1-2-3-4 motors
One is for a second helm station.

Don’t know if a fourth.

And I set my second motor up as port using a scan tool. Like the merc scan tool. Before (testing intentions only) 2 motors both as port confuse it seeing the same signals. It has to be swapped

I'm back to this again.

So my Spring to do list (can't believe Winter just started) is to add the NMEA backbone to my Garmin, purchase a new Fusion radio with NMEA to control from my Garmin as well as the Mercruiser Smartcraft Gateway to plug into the backbone as well. Problem is, I'm not sure what Smartcraft Gateway part number I should be ordering?? I found one and it was $629.15? This was the part number - I hope that's incorrect because that gateway is more than the Fusion.

I haven't gotten there yet but from my research it appears an alternative to the gateway would be to add a VesselView 4 or 7 (assuming you have the real estate). The VV4 is not much more expensive than that $630 you mentioned and adds an additional screen on which to view your engine data. That said, I've seen various gateway model numbers running in the $400 range.

Bob,
I already purchased and installed the gateway. I just need to fire up the motor to see if it actually works:D Everything else in the new NMEA network including the new Fusion to my Garmin display, as well as the NSX-300 remote work great on the NMEA 2000, so I'm hoping when I start the motor, the Smartcraft Gateway will come alive on my display.

should be able to turn It on, not start it but Key on kinda of deal. and power it up. Mine you see the gauges and needles, (red and green) light up once the engine ECU has power.

Well, my new gateways not working, or at least not showing up on my Garmin.

I have two green lights on the gateway and it is plugged into the purple connector on the engine port side. The other end is plugged into the t connector behind the helm. The network is powered. All of the other devices work through the NMEA to the Garmin (Fusion) but I am getting nothing from the smart craft gateway??
I swapped long cables and even t connector ports to see if I had a bad cable.
Is there an additional step I’m missing ?
Any ideas?

Did you check Settings...Communications...NMEA 2000 Setup to see if the gateway device is being recognized on the network? If it is, then you need to check Gauges...Installation...Engine Selection.

I’m guessing you mean in the Garmin unit?

I went into the menus and there are no settings that i can see. I go to engines, then it searches but doesn’t see it. I also did auto config, and nothing. I’m at a loss.
I wonder if there’s a way to see if my connection at the engine is bad?

I grabbed the manual and there is a 'settings' in NMEA 2000 communications. It's odd though, the networked Fusion head unit came right up on my display when I went to Media Player icon?? I'll have to look at that tomorrow. My brain hurts. With this, and having issues installing my wireless kill switch, it's been a long evening.

So I think I’m almost there. I found the settings where it showed mercury marine CANp Bus in the Garmin Unit preferred sources list. I added that to my device list in the NMEA Setup, and it’s there. It goes away when I turn the ignition off. That’s a good sign that there is signal. However I fired up the motor and still no gauge information??
I went to the gauges to see if there is a setting for Mercury and there isn’t. Anyone use a Garmin for NMEA gauges?

And thanks for your help alnav. You’ve steered me in the right direction.

I use Garmin and just set it up for gauges, albeit diesel. If your menu structure is like mine, select the "Engines" gauge, then "Menu". There should be an "Installation" selection there. Then, there should be an "Engine Selection" tab. If you find that, try playing with it. There is an "Auto Selection" that may bring everything in if the data is there.

Doing some more reading, Garmin mentions an 'isolator' on the NMEA network to isolate sources that could power the NMEA Bus? There isn't any power coming from the purple connector on the engine is there?

I'm probably going to have to sit in the boat, motor running, and call Garmin. What I thought would be pretty straight forward is really 'wonky'. It shows the SmartCraft CAN P Bus in the settings - communications - NMEA 2000 network. As I mentioned earlier I added it to my NMEA Devices. When I go to my 'engine settings', I select auto or 1 engine, and it says "no engine data available"....there are no menu options. Also, in the gauges section, there are no options available. Lame. I hope I didn't purchase a $400 Smartcraft Gateway "brick". Of course its past 90 days when I purchased over the Winter.

There is definitely power on the SmartCraft bus, I believe the gateway harness picks it up for its power. Power is pins A and B on the purple connector (upper left hand pins looking at the female connector face, upper right looking from behind). There is also such a thing as a NMEA 2000 power isolation t-connector (I believe it is yellow). But, I've never heard of it being needed since most devices, even if they are using an external source vice NMEA 2000 power will do the isolation internally. If the Smartcraft power was interfering with your NMEA 2000 network I suspect it would not work at all.

You may want to start with Mercury support. Since your gateway is showing up as a NMEA 2000 network device I am thinking there may be a problem with the data being sent (or not being sent). I have seen references to needing to have the ECM changed or modified by a Mercury tech as part of the process for engines around the age or older than yours. I do know from my research that the SmartCraft architecture was changed around the middle of the 2000-2010 decade.

Thank you for the advice. I will probably call Mercury as well as Garmin at the end of the week.

I took your advice alnav and called Mercury. The CS rep Brendan seemed to know exactly what my problem is. I needed a terminator resistor cable between the motor and gateway. For my engine, it has to be a 20' cable:( (2 resistors in the assembly I guess). The gateway is only about 36" from my motor. I'm going to have to use creative cable management.

If you already have a cable that you can't use after the new one is installed, you might try to add resistors to each end and see if that works, then send back the 20' one if you end up not needing it. 120 ohm resistors can be had for $5 for a dozen or so. I think you would simply splice each on across the blue and white wires in the cable if that what you have already(hopefully they haven't changed the convention). There are others on here who know more about this who might chime in if they see this. It may not be worth the trouble if the Mercury cable is not expensive.

This is the animal. It was $75 on fleaby. So I'm hoping this would do the trick. I probably just stick with this if it works. I was pretty frustrated last week, so $75 borders on an okay price if it works.

Now that I'm looking at this thing, the connection is female to female?? Wouldn't that need to be male to female in order to plug it in on the gateway side from the motor?

edit - I'll bet I need to order a junction box now. Rube Goldberg would be proud. o_O

I just ordered this. It looks like a straight through M/M 10 pin adapter. Only $20. Part number
