The last couple years I've had a West Marine version and it's developed a sticky film from sitting in the sun. The residue smears all over everything from dragging it across the deck. I don't usually drink the water on board so is it really necessary to have a white one? I would like to have one that's not going to mar gelcoat. If I bought a conventional hose and let it run prior to filling my tank would that be okay?
Thoughts?

The white hose is made for drinking water. A regular garden hose may be high in toxic metals or other volatile compounds. Maybe if the hose is well seasoned it would be better but no way would I drink from a new hose.

If you can't find a better hose at WM or Walmart I would try an RV dealer.

Unless you use the white hose frequently, I would imagine that the stuff that grows inside of it from sitting unused is as bad as a regular hose. I drank from a regular garden hose plenty when I was a kid.

If you just need a hose to wash the boat and fill the water tank for washing hands and flushing the head, I say just buy a normal hose.

When I'm working in the yard I drink a lot from the hose, and always have. When we fill the water tanks on the boat we use a regular garden hose, and always have. I don't seem to have gotten any ill effects from drinking the water in the tank.

Much ado about nothing????

Old hose is fine but a new hose is not good if you enjoy long term health. I have my opinion as to what I would drink from. No, hose water won't kill you but just because it doesn't have a noticeable effect doesn't mean its not bad for you.

One x ray won't kill you but if you have one every day its not healthy.

The one brand of hose from west marine (white) has a life time warranty. If theres a problem take it back.

I tried and a manager told me they only have a year warranty. I did exchange one a couple years ago but this time the manager nosed in and denied me halfway through. Said I can't just give ya a new hose every couple years. I'm like its a defect the last two had! This is the white never-kink hose. If you have literature stating that warranty I'd love to see it.

I couldn't find any warranty info on their website, so I am curious to see what they do tell you. I just threw one away that was all sticky.

The lifetime guarantee is stated clearly at the bottom. I did contact them and a nice lady by the name of Pam informed me if I don't have any luck at the local store to contact them and they would handle replacement direct. Nice to know another company stands behind their product.

Must not have had my glasses on. I got you all the way to the manufacturer and then dropped the ball.

Bringing this thread back......any good brand recommendations? I have 3 white 25' hoses that I'm looking to replace. One is stiff, and the other 2 are leaving marks (sticky).

i buy the cheap-os from home depot, and simply replace every year. between oil, salt, fish innards, sun, footsteps, it doesn't seem to make sense to try to maintain these things. it's all chinese material, anyway--not built to last.

I rarely use the dockside inlet because I like to keep the water in the tank fresh. We use bottled water for drinking. I do keep one of those white drinking water hoses in the trunk though but hate the stupid thing because it’s so stiff and takes up so much room.
I keep it for refilling the water tank, wash downs at transient docks, and for the rare occasion where I may want to connect to dockside water.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent 50’ white hose that’s not stiff and coils easily? I need a long one so I can wash my boat when I’m away from my home dock.

I switched to the CAMCO blue premium drinking hose this year and am happy with it, we use it strictly for dockside water. The expandable hoses are great for washdowns but I've never had one last more than a year before springing a leak.

yeah, i had to try a couple different expandable hoses before i found one that lasted more than a year.....this one seems to be good quality and has lasted a couple years so far with no issues and frequent use....we don't drink the water in our fresh water tank so no need to be rated for 'potable' water....

The threat is the chemicals leech into the water from the hose and then you apply that water to your skin or for some, drink it. It was never about "stuff that grows", although that is a concern.
