This weekend we decided to go to a movie. I haven't been inside a movie theatre in at least 2-3 years. I am more of watch at home.

First thing - had to pick our seat when we bought the tickets - that was new. But I guess if we were going to wind up with bad seats, we would know it before we paid for the tickets. No problem with that. Movie we saw was an afternoon movie - I think there were a total of 6-7 people in the theatre.

But the shock...

2 soft drinks, 2 Medium popcorns, 1 hot dog ------- $37. I was shocked!

I guess with fewer people attending movies in the theatre - this is how they keep the doors open.

But wow!

Did they have different priced tickets for different seat sections. If not, I'm sure that's next. Then they'll start narrowing the seats and limiting the size of your carry-ons.

Yep, but keep in mind that dependent upon the booking deal much of the ticket sales go back to the movie companies. The concession is were the theaters make their profits to run the house. I feel bad for kids today when a cheap date is over $50.

There are also plans out there now where for a flat monthly fee you can go see multiple movies.

The $37 did NOT include ticket prices. This was concession stand only.

Tickets were not that bad, went to an afternoon matinee, was maybe $15 for the tickets.

I understand they have to make money - was just shocked at the prices.

Disclaimer: I am in no way lobbying for or suggesting government oversight or regulations regarding movie theatre concession prices. I believe the free market should determine what people are willing to pay for a good/service and the business decide if they want to provide that product at that price.

With the crap they produce who even cares? The last movie I saw in a theater: Titanic! Yes, I just singlehandedly made this thread boating related.

Several things have conspired to kill movies as we knew and loved them back in the day.

Political correctness
Movies by design a commercial to sell toys
Trying to sell globally rather than locally (International market vs. US market)
Stars political views diminishing appeal
Forcing cultural change in the movies
Lack of creativity, remaking the same old stuff
Over-reliance on gore, not suspense in the mind (which is far more terrifying)
Lack of happy story lines and characters
Lack of happy endings

I am sure there are others...

We very rarely go to a movie anymore. The big seats are nice, but reserving the seat is a PIA. Between the price of the movie, snacks, and the crappy movies they churn out it just isn’t worth it.
Honestly, I think that overall the original content on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video is better than what’s in the movie theaters.

Like MM said, it's all about marketing to get you in the seat...the movies are terrible. Usually a political or social commentary in disguise as supposed entertainment.

We have "smart TV's" where we get Netflix and a handful of other channels where we can watch movies for free (not counting $12/month access fee) so that's where we go to the movies.

My popcorn is $.20 vs theirs at $15
My drinks are ~.50 vs theirs for $7.50

I honestly don't know how a young family (think millennials) with 3 or 4 kids can afford to go to a movie.

Can you say "Highway Robbery"?

I get it, but to play devils advocate for a moment. Every theater I know is typically located on high value real estate, has all the costs government has handed down in recent years, coupled with studios wanting a bigger cut. I'm actually surprised they survive at all. Dying business model...

You have to do it right. We get the large popcorn. We bring small cardboard popcorn containers and use them to share. We get the keg of Diet Coke and the admiral brings water. Free refills.

As for movies I thought Black Panther was about the militant political group. Shows what I know.

Unfortunately that's creeping into far too many tv shows as well. It seems like they are starting to get "preachy".

You can almost set time by it. A new series comes on and is pretty good and then in a few seasons the show is filled with the SJW's demands...

Some don't even bother to wait a few episodes. Try to sit through an entire episode of FBI. Pick the pander of your choice. Between movies, TV, NFL, ESPN, et. al., It's no wonder people are cutting the cord in droves and binge-watching reruns on Netflix and others.

You folks have not mentioned one favorable trend at theaters, at least around these parts - BEER! Within then last few years several of our local theaters have opened up bars within the theater.

There's nothing quite like watching Ralph Breaks the Internet with a tall cold one by your side...

The Admiral is very good at getting Groupon deals or AMC bundle packages cost about seven or eight dollars for the reclining seats theaters and the matinee shows seem to make it reasonable A family of four going to the movies today with all the goodies could be out of control it’s cheaper to go on the boat

Yes, I will say the beer and comfy recliners are nice (if you can stay awake).

A good subwoofer, surround speakers and a large HD flatscreen, and who needs a movie theater? Add a fireplace on a cold winter night, and you complete the package.

Don’t think I could name 5 current broadcast shows, and other than the news or some late night reruns of Two and a Half Men I can’t remember the last time I watched one.
Other than the financial networks during the day, most of what I watch are cable shows I DVR, Prime Video, or Netflix.
The guys who build, buy, sell and trade cars don’t talk about politics. Neither do the Pickers, Fisherman, or the people who build things. By DVR’ing them I don’t even have to watch the commercials and I can save my watching for bad weather.
Prime and Netflix have some good stuff to binge watch in the cold winter months too.
Tony Soprano, Al Swearengen, Harry Bosch, Pablo Escobar, Walter White, and the guy in the High Castle might bring up politics once in a while. But nothing too annoying.
Hey.....I just got an idea for a cable TV show......how about a show highlighting maintenance, repairs, upgrades and modifications to pleasure and private fishing boats?
Any Discovey, History or Motor Trend TV guys on here?
I could be the next Dennis Gage...........
