Boat Info
2002 340 Sundancer
Engines
8.1
So I recently got an 2002 340 Sundance’s, it has been winterized and shrink wrapped for 8 years on the hard.... it has twin 8.1’s with 100hrs on them. Previous owner barely used the boat and it just sat. I am sure there will be a lot of things to replace to get it going, what do you think I am looking at to get it running? There were no issues before it was hauled, but I know time will do it’s damage.... Any answers would be appreciated.

Cheers

Did you have a survey? What did it say you need? If it truly has been sitting 8 years, it will need batteries. It will likely have bad gas that will need to be pumped.

All fluids (oil, gas, coolant, etc) need to be flush.
All rubber parts ( impellers, hoses, seal, belts) need to be inspect. Some key parts like impellers replace even if they look ok.
Before trying to start the engines get a mechanic that lubricate everything, turn the engines by hand, etc. Make sure everything turns ok before cracking.
I would change the spark plugs, cables and injectors cleaning.
Check shaft aliment.
All seals might leak after first use. Shaft seal and engine/transmission seals.
Have a towing boat ready before first run.
Good Luck!

shrink wrapped for 8 years? I'll bet there's a bit of mold throughout. Where are you located on Erie.

What yv1 said!

I am confident as long as she was put to bed properly the block and heads are rock solid. The exterior parts on the engines are exposed to annual temp and moisture changes that hurts rubber and cast iron. Those parts need to be used regularly so they can live a proper life span.

If the boat was exposed to lots of humidity, get that oil changed before you start it, but have it tested! High chance of condensation build up in oil pan that never got a chance to vapor off with regular running.

I hope the holding tank was cleaned 8 years ago.... lol.

I should be getting into it this coming weekend, I’ll come back with some pictures... thanks for the ongoing responses....

Yikes.....I'm just imagining the condition of things like the fresh water system and the head/vacuflush. Depending on how it was put away both of those systems could be a hot mess after sitting that long.

Did you buy this boat without getting on it and/or having it surveyed first?

Along with what is stated above, pull the serpentine belt and make sure the pumps, alternator and idler pulleys (2) all rotate smoothly. The raw water pump will only turn easily one way.

+1 on the plugs and wires, buy the Volvo-Penta wires for the 8.1, about 75-80% of the Mercruiser wires and the are EXACTLY the same (except for the Volvo-Penta labeling).

Volvo wires: 3861295 (I bought mine from Cecil Marine, online)

I'm getting that picture. Going to be interesting...

To clarify, the boat was my fathers and he’s no longer able to use the boat. I am getting boat for a hell of a deal, penny’s on the dollar. Wanted to give an explanation why I didn’t get a survey, I would never walk into a situation like this normally.... will post some pictures here in a few...

Congrats on your new to you boat. You may have “soft parts” that are going to need to be looked at for sure. This is a quality boat as 2002 was a good year for SeaRay’s. If the engines were properly fogged the cylinder walls should be in good shape. Can’t wait to see the pictures of your time capsule.

Most likely everything is going to be ok. Just be patient bringing her back to life. Set your priorities right, focus on safety first then comfort and cosmetics. Have a back up plan if something goes wrong. Make sure all bilge pumps and seacock valve are working. That includes making sure the battery charger is working well.

We have the same year/model, cept with 6.2’s :)-(.
Ask away and congrats! We love ours
We stay on ours everyweekend.
