I was almost side-swiped this morning and when I honked the horn and said "get off the phone", they reply was I'm on GPS not the phone. That is still distracted driving.

I am a heavy GPS user and have found that phone GPS usage IS distracting exponentially compared to a Garmin or Tom Tom on your dash or your cars built GPS.

So many complain about texting but it is not the only distraction issue.

I use the phone a lot for navigation - but always with an ear piece. Instructions are spoken, I don't have to look at the phone at all. Can focus on driving.

Distracted driving and drug abuse kills thousands times more people than guns. But what makes the news whenever there is one of these shootings. Damn media it's all about ratings and money.

I don't disagree with your sentiment but I think firearm related deaths are near parity with motor vehicle related deaths. No clue on drugs though....

15.5 K gun deaths, 40K auto deaths in 2017

To modify my original numbers there are 1.6 million car crashes per year with about 400,000 of them caused by distracted driving. I would say there not 1.6 million shootings per year but the fatality rate would be higher. Think of how people are permanently injured or disfigured because of distracted driving.

Aprox. 70,000 drug related deaths. Again think of the lives ruined as a result.

Thin the herd

Re: the drugs deaths I would agree in most cases but in distracted driving. Accidents caused by distracted driving injure thousands of innocent victims. Guns and drugs not nearly so. Drunk driving is another issue all together.

That is what is proven as "distracted" accidents. Likely another quarter are unproven.

Funny that this thread would happen today. This afternoon I heard the local radio station talking about WA's severe distracted driving law that passed last year. No drinking anything, no eating anything, no hand held devices etc.

The biggest violators are adults, not kids and the biggest offensive item is people adjusting their GPS units.

So are the police actually enforcing this new law? Maybe make a 50% increase in your insurance premium if you cause a distracted driving accident.

So are big macs, electric shavers, eye makeup, etc. :)
Substitute a plain hamburger for the Big Mac and the worry over the lettuce and special sauce falling into you lap goes away making the entire experience not a distraction.

They only put one of two levels of condiments on sandwiches, too little or too much, placement is typically dripping out of one edge. They often float hamburgers in ketchup and onions.

As much as the nanny state wants to try, you cannot regulate ability and stupid? So now the over stimulated will be under stimulated and fall asleep. LOL

Not really, they will have a weekend emphasis, but they advertise it days in advance.
Other than that, I see people all the time on their phones, in heavy traffic as well.
You can almost always tell the people too, they're usually holding traffic up in one way or the other.

Not entending any political spin on this lasting injuries assertion, but I can tell you based upon 40 years of dealing with trauma patients, that getting shot leads to many life long, disfiguring injuries. Cars and guns are both deadly, and yes, I own both.
