I am purchasing a 42 Sundancer, after having the survey completed yesterday, The surveyor recommended that the Onan 9.5 k generator is on its last leg, It is running fine, but there was a lot of corrosion and looks rough. The rest of the boat is mint.. My question is can the a new generator be installed without actually having to lift out the port motor ? The surveyor didn't seem to this so, or can a new one be installed in pierces? has anymore had to replace this ? and if so.. what does it involve? looking for input
Thanks
John

I would go with what your surveyor says. Sometimes it takes less time to lift a motor out of the way to gain access to something than to try to work around it.

It is not surprising that the gen may look rough and the rest of the boat is mint. The 420’s were known to have water from the fresh water shower located over the gen have water run down and land on the top of the generator. On my 420 the fresh water shower was off limits, we use the fresh water wash down on the back of the boat to rinse off to help prevent this corrrision problem on the gen. If it runs good I won’t waste the money for a new gen just because it doesn’t look good.

I have to agree with Larry about not replacing the gen if the surveyor is basing his recommendation based on looks.
On my previous 420 the gen looked terrible and after removal of the sound shield the rest of the gen looked and ran fine.
I did replace the pan which was a job but was done without removing an engine or the gen for that matter. I took the sound shield home to my garage and repaired and repainted the rust and when it was installed over a freshly painted engine and a new pan it looked like new. While it was pulled away from the wall I replaced the hoses and renewed the heat exchanger which had not been touched since new. After cleaning the heat exchanger, all wire connections and grounds it started and ran like new when needed.
I found a different cause of the rust being rain/wash water was entering the hole for the cockpit shower hose not the use of the shower. The water would follow the hose down to the top of the sound shield and run all over. I ran the hose a different way and sealed the hose which seemed to stop the damage.

My 420 the previous owner replaced the entire stater on the generator they basically slid the entire generator out once they removed the big exhaust hose.

I always love it when people drop into the forum, ask for assistance, get plenty of very useful information, don't acknowledge it and disappear.

Sigh......
