What do you all use as "tether" to secure the chain to the boat cleat rather than hanging directly on the windlass? Just a bridle and a snap?

I've been avoiding going all chain as stuck anchors are a concern on Lake Lanier. Do you guys carry bolt cutters just in case??
I already have 25' in front of the rode, Can /how do you spliced? Have them welded?
I gotta admit, progress 1 suck.

David,
I welded my old 25' chain to an additional 50' purchased from Amazon. As to the trees, I look very closely at the Garmin sonar image before I drop the hook. Any feathery things on the bottom and I don't take the risk - pulled up two massive branches before and that was enough of that kind of fishing.
I used this to join the existing 30 feet to the new chain. Works well through the gypsy.
Industrial Grade 1DJR1 Connecting Link, 5/16 In, 1950 Lb Cap
I carry a file in the tool box to sand off the nubs on the link, then I can separate the two chains. I also left the original rope/chain attached to the boat so I can cut the rope in case all the chain is deployed.
We have pretty strong currents here and some gusty wind from time to time. So far I've had no trouble with it at all. Works like a charm in the windlass. I could be wrong, but I think that rating is if you plan on using it for lifting objects.I like using the existing chain and the link. The link says its rated to 1950 lbs. Is that enough?
I'e got about 150' of rope backing up the chain. I'd prefer to untie from the anchor locker and fasten to a couple of fenders. That way I'd have a chance of coming back with a diver and recovering my hook. Not sure I can see that kind of detail with this 1990s technology lol.
Better invest in a pair of cutters!
