Official 280 Sundancer Thread

FWIW, the knob is threaded and I think when screwed in, it prevents movement of the rail that extends the seat. I think the threads might be 1/4 20, but I can pull it verify if you like. Have you looked in that general area to see if the previous owner just installed a 1/4 20 (or whatever size) bolt to keep it in place?

Thanks for the specs. I looked at it yesterday and there is nothing to hold the seat back - resulting in the movement. Since we don't need to recline the seat I'm going to screw in a bolt with a locking washer. Hopefully it's your recommendation 1/4-20 and not some special size. FYI I didn't see the rail or the bolt in the 280 parts list.

1/4-20 sounds about right from when I made one. Or, at least, it's a common size regardless - of that, I'm positive. But either way, it's not rocket science - if it fits, it fits. If it doesn't, try a different size. You don't need a lock washer - your bolt isn't going to go all the way in. The tip of the bolt provides the friction (very little is needed, fyi) against the inner rail.

If you can't find it in your manual and you want the "nice" knob, just call your local dealer. Just describe it to them - they'll know exactly what you mean.

I'm think of replacing the 'feeble' horn over the winter. Has anyone done so and if you have which one did you get.

Good morning everyone. Before I do something stupid I thought I’d check with all the smart people here. I have a number of blemishes I’d like to remove. I really like Meguiar’s Scratch X 2.0 for rubbing out scratches on my cars but haven’t tried it on fiberglass/gelcoat. The instructions say to not use on rubber or vinyl but says nothing about fiberglass. Any thoughts?

5/16 18 bolt did the trick. Not as pretty as a fancy knob/bolt but since we never plan on extending the cushion so I decided just to spend 65 cents

Hey, if it works for your purposes, that's all that matters!

Did you get a bronze of SS bolt?

Not sure what you mean by blemishes. Also I don't know the product but I'd hesitate to use a 'heavy duty' compound on gelcoat. It's a lot thinner than auto finishes. There are a number of brands including Meguiers that make lighter compounds for boats but they're generally for removing oxidation or chalking rather than scratches. If it's ghosting you're trying to remove 1200, followed by 2000 grit sandpaper then light duty compound/polish would do the trick. Scratches especially in colored getcoat is a different animal and probably require gelcoat to match.

I left my original horn and added this electric air horn mounted on the anchor cover. spliced into original horn wires so it was a quick add-on. sounds much better than original.

AFI 10011 Marine Compact Dual Trumpet Deck Electric Horn (12-Volt)

Thanks - did you mount it on top of the cover or underneath?

I mounted it on top so it is easily removable i would then just have to caulk the 3 holes. also , the horn wires are right there on the inside, and even though it is caulked, if there should ever be a leak, it would be into the anchor box. the whole install took just a few minutes and the horn sounds much improved. I had to play with the exact spot because depending upon where you mount it, it may bump up against the anchor when you lift the door up, which limits the amount you can raise that door. Mine opens up about 80% , but if I need to, the horn can be quickly removed for full access to the anchor locker. If this works for you and you want pics or more info, let me know. Also, be sure to check out the sound of the horn before you purchase it. It is not the low tone that you hear from the big ships, it is a little higher pitched.

So how did you check out the sound?

Anyone have an extra data card? Need one for my garmin gps 182c. It's the original gps. I would need it to be for lake michigan but maybe I'd be able to change that somehow?

There are some free updates on the garmin site others you pay for it, might be worth checking out.

2001 Aft Cabin panel removal question:

I noticed water in my aft cabin, the fore panel that covers the cockpit drain , helm wiring, and backside of the steps is wet so I assume it's coming from there. Anyone know how to remove that panel?

Hi ferris, had the same problem, turned out the hose from the drain had loosened up, never did find a way to remove that panel, wound up cutting a small access hole about 6x4" then covered it with a small plaque. Actually looks pretty good, and leaves future access

Thought I'd post a few pictures of an upgrade I'd wanted to do for a while now. Since we got the boat last fall I have loathed the cockpit sink sprayer. The momentary on/off, occasional dripping and general "bleh" look of it peeved me. I wanted to stick with a factory look, so I ordered what I think is the same faucet used on the later 280s made by scandvik. Ended up needing a 30" 1/2 to 1/2 faucet line ($8 at home depot) and a stainless washer ($2 at West Marine) to cover the existing hole nicely. Overall, I'm very happy with the result.
